I disagree Makheru. I think Obama got stuck with this war, and based on the border proximity with Pakistan which is a nuclear power – there just isn’t any choice.

So as it pertains to Afghanistan and it’s proximity to Pakistan and Iran, what are the limited set of problems a troop surge will solve?

Mostly the issue is to support Pakistan by eliminating, or severely crippling the Taliban. It doesn’t do anything relative to Iran. If the Taliban is left to run Afghanistan and to promote their version of Islamic Insanity into Pakistan – probably forcing a Civil War…
Then we have a nuclear war to deal with. India is not going to tolerate that sort of insanity on their border, armed with nuclear missiles – nor is Israel going to tolerate a radical Islamic power with nuclear weapons.
That is really what Afghanistan was all about from the beginning – and why the Bushit and the Dick screwed things up so badly by not letting our troops finish the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

Eliminate? Never. Control or diminish, maybe.
The Taliban and Al Queda existed before Obama or Bush, and were ineffective (comparible to 9/11 and previous embassy and millitary assults). The best that can be done is to make their existance difficult.

I’d like to hear Obama cut through all the BS and just say that if that is the truth. The dual wars were Bush’s Kobiashi Maru, and he failed the test of character. Is it also Obama’s, and will he pass the test?

I think we are basically out of Iraq. The biggest danger in the region isn’t Iran – it is a radicalized Pakistan.
My belief is that the Taliban may have overplayed their hand in Pakistan.
And no – you can’t kill an idea…
But you sure can come up with a better one – which in this case is something the locals have to do – not us – as the Bushit tried.

The Taliban came out of one of the regional warlord groups as part of the radical Wahabi movement of the past 30 years. Big distinction between them and the typical conservative Islam practiced in these areas. WE can’t eliminate them…
But the locals can.

We made the Taliban – just as we manufactured Al Qaeda to fight the Soviet threat in the 70’s.
We are not going to eliminate the sort of old-style traditional Islam that is practiced in Afghanistan. But it is important to remember, the Taliban is a perversion of that – even to the Afghani people.
We can make the Taliban weak enough, regional and local forces can wipe the out.
