France’s ex-justice minister Rachida Dati has lost her chauffeur-driven limousine and bodyguards after annoying President Nicolas Sarkozy with a recent TV appearance, reports said Wednesday.

Dati, who fell out of favour with Sarkozy last year and now serves as a member of the European parliament, turned up on national television this month to comment on regional elections in which Sarkozy’s party was roundly defeated.

After spotting Dati on the screen and complaining that she had been absent from the campaign trail, Sarkozy called the head of national police and asked that she be stripped of her limousine, chauffeur and security detail, the Canard Enchaine satirical weekly reported.

Aides to Dati confirmed some aspects of the report.

“We are talking essentially about three police officers who were told to end their assignment on March 14”, the night that Dati went on television, said the official.

“It’s not clear that it was a decision taken by the president,” he said. “What is certain is that it was a decision by the interior minister.”

The interior ministry said former ministers are allowed to keep their limousines and security detail for six months after they leave the government and that Dati’s time had expired.

The 44-year-old Dati became the first French Arab woman to hold a powerful post in government when she was named justice minister in 2007 after Sarkozy’s election.

A fixture of celebrity magazines, Dati has recently been seen once again in Sarkozy’s entourage, fuelling speculation that she could return from political exile in the Strasbourg assembly.

Damn… this is a hell of a lot more fun than ugly-assed Republicans…

School said to double as nightclub to be investigated

School district officials will visit the Harambee Institute Charter School today to find out firsthand about allegations that the West Philadelphia school has been selling alcohol on weekends.

“We are going to seriously look at the charges and do what we have to do up to closing the school, if we have to,” Superintendent Arlene C. Ackerman said yesterday.

Earlier in the day City Controller Alan Butkovitz accused Harambee of running a school by day but a nightclub after hours. The school was “found to be operating a nightclub and serving alcohol illegally” on weekends, he said. Harambee Charter is on 66th Street near Media.

But Butkovitz focused his news conference yesterday on his findings that a woman working as Harambee’s chief financial officer, Rhonda Sharif, was – at the same time – employed in a similar capacity at two other charter schools: the Math, Civics and Sciences Charter, at Broad and Spring Garden streets, and the Khepera Charter School, on Carpenter Lane, near Cresheim Street, in Mount Airy.

Butkovitz said that Sharif first worked for Harambee in 2003, at a salary of $33,046.

In 2008, Sharif made $183,108 from all three schools, and had put in for having worked 463 days, the controller said.

In addition, a construction company owned by Sharif’s husband, “Str8-Hand Construction Inc.,” received an estimated $7.5 million in maintenance contracts at the same three schools where Sharif worked.

No one answered the phone at Harambee yesterday. The school published an open letter on its Web site calling media reports a “misrepresentation” and “a very one-sided and unbalanced view of what charter schools represent. ”

Butkovitz said that he was prompted to investigate financial operations at several charter schools following the federal probe of Philadelphia Academy Charter School, in Northeast Philadelphia. The school’s founder, Brien Gardiner, committed suicide in May 2008 before his trial.

Benjamin Rayer, the district’s official in charge of charter and Renaissance schools, said last night that he will visit Harambee today. He said the school’s CEO told him that the building operated a banquet hall for weddings and birthdays. A Web site touts the facility as the Damani Banquet Hall.

“There has been a liquor license assigned to the property since 1936, to what at the time was the Overbrook Italian-American Democratic Club,” said Stacey Witalec, spokeswoman for the state Liquor Control Board. But the license, transferred to the Harambee Institute Corp. in 2002, expired Oct. 31, 2008, Witalec said.Harambee School was incorporated on Aug. 8, 1997, and received $14.7 million in public funds in 2005-2007.

Now – the Nightclub thing is an issue of propriety more than anything else, as theoretically the building is either owned by, or leased by the Charter School and not the School District. The Liquor license issue is serious, but these guys can’t be the first operators in Philly to have issues with the liquor board…

That double and triple billing, and the inside contracts though…

Amiri Baraka Calls Michael Steele A “Real Public Coon” At Black Writers’ Conference

Renowned author, Amiri Baraka, had harsh words for the Republican party and words of praise for Massachusetts Governor, Deval Patrick and President Barack Obama at the Black Writer’s Conference at Medgar Evers College last Saturday.

Baraka revealed that he had recently been in the presence of Deval Patrick. Baraka said that he knew Deval’s father, Pat Patrick, who played saxophone with Sun Ra and his Arkestra as well as John Coltrane. Baraka could go on to say how Obama and Patrick were descendants of the Black creative movement that he was a part of.

He would talk about the need for African Americans to be supportive of Obama, bringing up Hannity and Beck as those who opposed him. He also had a harsh criticism for Michael Steele, who he called a “Real, Public Coon.”

Toni Morrison also spoke at the Writer’s Conference and she revealed some interesting stories about when she was an editor for Random House and published books by Angela Davis and Muhammed Ali. Former honorees, Sonia Sanchez and Cornel West also addressed the crowd in Brooklyn.

Obama to allow gas and oil drilling off Virginia coast

President Obama is set to announce that he will allow oil and gas drilling 50 miles off Virginia’s coast, including a possible sale two years from now of leases off the state’s shores.

The decision, which Obama will announce with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar at Andrews Air Force Base this morning, ends a long-standing ban on drilling along much of the East Coast, from Delaware to central Florida.

Obama’s move will represent a victory for Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, who campaigned last year on making the state the “Energy Capital of the East Coast” and using proceeds from drilling to pay for transportation. (Congress would still need to pass a bill allowing Virginia to receive royalties.)

Most Virginia leaders — regardless of political party — have expressed interest in drilling for oil and natural gas, including both U.S. Sens. Jim Webb and Mark. Warner and most members of the state’s congressional delegation.

But environmental groups and some Democratic members of Congress, including U.S. Reps. James P. Moran Jr. of Northern Virginia and Robert C. Scott of Hampton Roads, say they worry that possible spills and new infrastructure onshore and off could harm plants, animals, tourism and the naval base in Norfolk, the world’s largest.

In anticipation of today’s announcement, the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter already sent out a statement.

“We are deeply disappointed that the Obama administration has chosen to open up new areas that have long stood protected from the dirty, risky business of offshore drilling,” said Glen Besa, chapter director. “Our beloved clean Virginia beaches are the backbone of our coastal economy, generating billions of dollars in revenues from tourism, recreation and commercial fishing…There are not only the risks of spills both chronic and catastrophic but also the industrialization of our coastal communities that would either debilitate or destroy Virginia’s coastal economy,”

Virginia has been in line to be the first Atlantic Coast state to drill off its shore. It still will probably be years before it starts, even with the necessary approval from the Obama administration.

The 25-year-old federal moratorium on energy exploration and development off the coast of Virginia and other states expired in 2008. Virginia has been the only state on the East Coast included in the Minerals Management Service’s five-year plan.

Tea Party of Nevada candidate hit with felony bad check charges, also facing home foreclosure

A Nevada asphalt contractor who faces a legal challenge to his Tea Party of Nevada candidacy for U.S. Senate was hit Friday with felony theft and bad check charges in Las Vegas that allege he bounced a $5,000 business check last year.

Scott Ashjian is one of a record 22 candidates, including 12 Republicans, running for the seat held by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who is seeking a fifth term.

Bernie Zadrowski, head of the Clark County district attorney’s office bad check unit, said he would seek an arrest warrant Monday in Las Vegas Justice Court. Ashjian could face up to 14 years in state prison if convicted.

Uhhhhhh… Baglette – You are not supposed to do all that writing bad checks, stealing stuff, and getting convicted…

Until AFTER you are elected. Wish you guys would actually sit down and read the Constitution…

With the Internet, many of these games make it online, where they can be downloaded anywhere on the Internet, anywhere in the world for free.

Is this Japanese pornographic version of “Grand Theft Auto” removing social inhibitions? What is the message, when in order to “win” the game the player must commit rape? I this yet another training game for violent action, without any regard for consequences? And let’s not even get into the dehumanization of women…

Ending Modern Slavery – Not Only In the Rest of the World

Estimates vary on the number of people being held in slavery in the Untied States.

Modern Slavery

In textbooks across the country, students are still taught that slavery in the US ended with the adoption of the 13th Amendment in 1865.

But the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) knows better, and its Modern-Day Slavery Museum is traveling throughout Florida to drive that point home–that slavery persists in the agriculture fields of the state right up through this very day.

The Village Voice recently described the significance of the museum this way: “Though it’s unlikely to compete for crowds with Disneyworld, the Modern-Day Slavery Museum may be Florida’s most important new attraction.”

These women would never have done what this trifling wannabe has done. She should have been charged with a misdemeanor.

American Taliban Plot to Mass Murder Police

Another right wing group, another Domestic Terror plot.

The “Hutaree” might best be described as the American Taliban, a “christian” fundamentalist, anti-government militia planning to murder government officials. Per research done by the SPLC, these groups are on the rise in the US – fed in no small part by right wing TV and radio personalities own brand of extremism and hate.

Suspected Militiamen Charged With Plotting to Kill Officers

Nine alleged members of a Michigan-based Christian militia group were indicted by a federal grand jury in Detroit in an alleged 17-month plot to attack and kill local, state and federal law enforcement officials.

On the heels of weekend raids in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana, the FBI unsealed an indictment today revealing charges of seditious conspiracy, attempted use of weapons of mass destruction and teaching the use of explosive materials. The charges were filed against nine alleged members of the Hutaree militia, which writes on its Web site that it is preparing for battle with the anti-Christ.

The indictment also charges all the defendants with carrying a firearm during a violent crime on at least one separate occasion.

According to the FBI and the Michigan U.S. attorney’s office, the defendants planned to “kill an unidentified member of local law enforcement and then attack the law enforcement officers who gather in Michigan for the funeral,” using improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which are considered weapons of mass destruction.

The indictment said the plan, allegedly hatched in August 2008, was to take place next month.

“Because the Hutaree had planned a covert reconnaissance operation for April which had the potential of placing an unsuspecting member of the public at risk, the safety of the public and of the law enforcement community demanded intervention at this time,” said U.S. Attorney Barbara L. McQuade.

The defendants include a family of four: David Brian Stone, 45; his wife, Tina Stone, 44; his son, Joshua Matthew Stone, 21, of Clayton, Mich.; and his other son, David Brian Stone Jr., 19, of Adrian, Mich.

Also charged in the five-count indictment were Joshua Clough, 28, of Blissfield, Mich.; Michael Meeks, 40, of Manchester, Mich.; Thomas Piatek, 46, of Whiting, Ind.; Kristopher Sickles, 27, of Sandusky, Ohio; and Jacob Ward, 33, of Huron, Ohio.

If convicted, the nine could get maximum sentences of life in prison.
