Will Meghan Markle be the first black British Royal? Not so Fast…

Seems the Royal History is a bit “darker” than we thought…

I have a niece who is a dead ringer for Charlotte.

Britain’s black queen: Will Meghan Markle really be the first mixed-race royal?

A portrait of Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III, and American actress Meghan Markle, who is engaged to Prince Harry.

When Britain’s Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle announced their engagement Monday, Twitter erupted with the news that the newest princess in the royal family would be bi-racial.

“We got us a Black princess ya’ll,” GirlTyler exulted. “Shout out to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Their wedding will be my Super Bowl.”

But Markle, whose mother is black and whose father is white, may not be the first mixed-race royal.

Some historians suspect that Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III who bore the king 15 children, was of African descent.

Historian Mario De Valdes y Cocom argues that Queen Charlotte was directly descended from a black branch of the Portuguese royal family: Alfonso III and his concubine, Ouruana, a black Moor.

In the 13th century, “Alfonso III of Portugal conquered a little town named Faro from the Moors,” said Valdes, a researcher for Frontline PBS. “He demanded [the governor’s] daughter as a paramour. He had three children with her.”

According to Valdes, one of their sons, Martin Alfonso, married into the noble de Sousa family, who also had black ancestry. Queen Charlotte had African blood from both families.

Valdes, who grew up in Belize, began researching Queen Charlotte’s African ancestry in 1967, after he moved to Boston.

“I had heard these stories from my Jamaican nanny, Etheralda “TeeTee” Cole,” Valdes recalled.

He discovered that a royal physician, Baron Christian Friedrich Stockmar, described Queen Charlotte as “small and crooked, with a true mulatto face.”

Sir Walter Scott  wrote that she was “ill-colored” and called her family “a bunch of ill-colored orangutans.”

One prime minister once wrote of Queen Charlotte: “Her nose is too wide and her lips too thick.”

In several British colonies, Queen Charlotte was often honored by blacks who were convinced from her portraits and likeness on coins that she had African ancestry.

Valdes became fascinated by official portraits of Queen Charlotte in which her features, he said, were visibly “negroid.”

“I started a systematic geneological search,” said Valdes, which is how he traced her ancestry back to the mixed-race branch of the Portuguese royal family.

Charlotte, who was born May 19, 1744, was the youngest daughter of Duke Carl Ludwig Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Princess Elisabeth Albertine of Saxe-Hildburghausen. She was a 17-year-old German princess when she traveled to England to wed King George III, who later went to war with his American colonies and lost rather badly. His mother most likely chose Charlotte to be his bride.

“Back in London, the king’s enthusiasm mounted daily,” wrote Janice Hadlow in the book, “A Royal Experiment: The Private Life of King George III.” “He had acquired a portrait of Charlotte and was said to be mighty fond of it, but won’t let any mortal look at it.”

King George III ordered that gowns be made and waiting for his new bride when she arrived in London.

He met Charlotte for the first time on their wedding day, Sept. 8, 1761.

“Introduced to the king, Charlotte ‘threw herself at his feet, he raised her up, embraced her and led her through the garden up the steps into the palace,’ ” Hadlow wrote. “Some later reminiscences asserted that at the moment of their meeting, the king had been shocked by Charlotte’s appearance.”

In a portrait painted by Sir Allan Ramsay, Queen Charlotte’s hair is piled high in curly ringlets. Her neck is long and her skin appears to be café-au-lait.

Ramsay, Valdes said, was an abolitionist married to the niece of Lord Mansfield, the judge who ruled in 1772 that slavery should be abolished in the British Empire. And Ramsay was uncle by marriage to Dido Elizabeth Lindsay, the black grand-niece of Lord Mans field. Dido’s life story was recently recounted in the movie, “Belle.”

In 1999, the London Sunday Times published an article with the headline: “REVEALED: THE QUEEN’S BLACK ANCESTORS.”

“The connection had been rumored but never proved,” the Times wrote. “The royal family has hidden credentials that make its members appropriate leaders of Britain’s multicultural society. It has black and mixed-raced royal ancestors who have never been publicly acknowledged. An American genealogist has established that Queen Charlotte, the wife of George III, was directly descended from the illegitimate son of an African mistress in the Portuguese royal house.”

After the Times story, The Boston Globe hailed Valdes’ research as ground breaking. Charlotte, who died in 1818, passed on her mixed-race heritage to her granddaughter, Queen Victoria, and to Britain’s present day monarch, Queen Elizabeth.

Some scholars in England dismissed the evidence as weak —  and beside the point.

Fox News removed from UK airwaves

RIP Fox News Britain. The end has come to the conservative network in Great Britain after failing to garner viewers.

CNN reported Tuesday that Rupert Murdoch and his sons have decided to pull the network rather than to trying to continue to attract an audience. The network also caused a major problem as the Murdoch family tried to conduct a $15 billion takeover of Sky News.

“Fox News is focused on the U.S. market and designed for a U.S. audience and, accordingly, it averages only a few thousand viewers across the day in the U.K.,” 21st Century Fox said in a statement.

“We have concluded that it is not in our commercial interest to continue providing Fox News in the U.K.,” it added.

The final broadcast in the U.K. will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. local time.

More British Intelligence Documents Show Payments From Chumph Campaign to Russian Hackers

Need to ask the question…Why is the FBI suppressing this?

I mean, the validity of this is freaking easy to nail down.

UK spy documents: Trump Organization paid Russian hackers who took orders from Putin

Last December, the U.K. government was reportedly given extensive records of Trump campaign officials’ interactions with the Kremlin.

The Guardian reported former MI6 agent Christopher Steele’s infamous dossier about possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia was first given to the UK intelligence services. These documents reportedly contain records of payments from the Trump campaign to banks of Russian cyber trolls tasked with spreading disinformation ahead of the 2016 election.

Court filings confirmed earlier this month that Steele passed along the information because he felt it was “of considerable importance in relation to alleged Russian interference in the US presidential election.”

Steele outlined how four Trump campaign representatives traveled to Prague in the Czech Republic in August or September to have “secret discussions with Kremlin representatives and associated operators/hackers.” The group discussed how they would pay hackers for breaking into the Democratic Party’s computers and developing a “contingency plans for covering up operations.”

The memo reported that hackers were paid by the Trump Organization, however, the hackers were under the direction of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Trump’s lawyer Michael Cohen is said to have attended the meeting in Prague, though he has described the memo as “totally fake, totally inaccurate.” He also claimed he’d never been to Prague.

Steele produced 16 memos using Russian sources to describe the web of collusion between Trump aides and Russian intelligence or other officials. A copy of the memos was given to the news outlet Fusion but instructed them not to disclose the material to anyone without approval. They agreed and Steele agreed to provide a copy to Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) after McCain learned the memos existed from the UK ambassador to Moscow.

The Guardian reports that the court documents revealed Steele continued to get “unsolicited intelligence” on the links between Trump and Russia. As a result, Steele drew up another memo from Dec. 13. He turned that memo to a senior British national security official and gave encrypted versions to Fusion to give to McCain.

Court statements argue Steele was under an obligation to give the information to the UK and US “at a high level by persons with responsibility for national security.” However, Steele said he never gave a copy to any news organizations, merely off-the-record briefings about the dossier to some journalists in the fall of 2016. They argue they had no involvement in BuzzFeed’s decision to publish the document.

The dossier wasn’t delivered to former President Barack Obama and then-President-elect Donald Trump until January.

Muslim Woman Faces Down England Trumpazoids

The “English Defense League” is the UK’s version of the US’s Trump neo-Nazis.

They decided to throw a big bash, and demonstrate on the streets of Birmingham, doing the usual terrorizing of little old Muslim ladies by screaming invective and racial slurs…

And along came this woman…

Whoops!

This Muslim Woman Faces Down Islamophobes in Iconic Image of Defiance

An image of a woman staring down a hate group has become a social media phenomenon. It’s reassuring proof of Britain’s defiance of racists and xenophobes.

Maybe she should have handed the guy a Pepsi.

A Muslim woman who was pictured this weekend calmly facing down an anti-Muslim demonstrator with an expression of amused contempt has become a social media phenomenon.

The woman was confronting a protestor from the so-called English Defense League, on the streets of Birmingham, England’s second largest city. The EDL is a far right group which describes itself on its website as “a street movement from the English working class” which is “the forefront of the counter-jihad”, refers to Islam as a “barbaric evil cult,” and frequently organizes demonstrations to protest immigration and multiculturalism.

Tweeting the photograph, Birmingham Member of Parliament Jess Phillips wrote: “Who looks like they have power here, the real Brummy on the left or the EDL who migrated for the day to our city and failed to assimilate?” Her tweet had been reposted 10,000 times by Monday morning.

The woman pictured has been identified as Saffiyah Khan, a Birmingham resident. She told the BBC that when the picture was taken, she had stepped forward to defend a woman wearing a hijab who had been surrounded by a group of men.

She said she had initially been happy “to stay out of the way”, but “stepped forward” when another woman shouted “Islamophobe” at members of the EDL who had gathered in Centenary Square.

“A group of 25 quite big-looking EDL lads surrounded her,” she said.

“I stepped forward and identified myself as someone who supported her and contradicted them.”

Khan, who was born in the U.K. and is half-Pakistani, half-Bosnian, said she “wasn’t intimidated in the slightest”.

She added: “He put his finger in my face. It was very aggressive. A police officer was there and the man took his finger out of my face. I wouldn’t have responded violently.”

“I don’t like seeing people getting ganged up on in my town,” Khan said.

The EDL demonstration attracted around 100 people, and was condemned by political leaders of Birmingham city council. The city has a 22% Muslim population in comparison to a national average in the U.K. of around 4%.

Birmingham central mosque hit back at the protest in truly British style by organizing a tea party.

1 Million (And Growing) Brits Petition to Keep the Chumph Out of The UK as an Embarassment

In the UK, citizens can petition Parliament on an issue. Once 100,000 signatories are reached, the issue must be debated on the Parliament floor. This isn’t the first time the English have wanted to ban the Chumph from their shores, Prior to out election over 600,000 signed a petition resulting in him being banned from the country.

While Parliament often ignores the petitions, the prospect of several million pissed off citizens signing the petition makes it impossible to ignore politically.

No way, the tacky arsed Chumph is getting feted by the Queen. The Queen hasn’t said anything yet. She and Michelle Obama developed a special friendship, setting off a bit of controversy when she and the Queen hugged. I know nothing about Mrs Trump’s personality…But Michelle is a hard act to follow.

Don’t let Trump embarrass our queen, say a million Britons

Over a million people in Britain have signed a petition calling for U.S. President Donald Trump’s planned state visit to be canceled to avoid embarrassing Queen Elizabeth, in a grassroots backlash against his immigration policies.

The invitation to make a state visit, which will involve lavish displays of royal pageantry and a banquet hosted by the monarch, was conveyed by Prime Minister Theresa May when she visited Trump in Washington last week.

The petition was started before May’s trip, but gained traction after Trump issued an executive order barring Syrian refugees and suspending travel from seven Muslim-majority countries, sparking protests at home and abroad.

Further complicating matters, the Sunday Times newspaper reported tensions were mounting between London and Washington because Trump, a climate change denier, did not want a “lecture” during his visit by heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles, a passionate environmentalist. [bit.ly/2jMRraF]

The petition against the state visit, which is on the British parliament’s website, passed the one million mark on Monday morning and the number of signatories was rising fast.

“Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the UK in his capacity as head of the US Government, but he should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen,” the petition says.

It was the second most popular petition ever on the parliamentary website, after one calling for a second referendum on membership of the European Union drew over 4 million signatures last year.

Once a petition passes 100,000 signatures, lawmakers must consider it for debate. Such debates are largely symbolic and rarely affect government policy, although one on this particular issue would potentially be embarrassing for May.

Her Downing Street office said the invitation had been extended and accepted, declining further comment.

A year ago, parliament debated a petition calling for Trump, then the Republican candidate, to be barred from the United Kingdom. It gathered close to 600,000 signatures before it was closed last June.

BLM Goes International – Protests in England

Not just in the US anymore…

Black Lives Matter Activists Stage Protests Across Britain

Black activists, responding to calls for a nationwide protest against racial injustice, staged demonstrations in London and several other cities across Britain on Friday, in their boldest show of support to date for the emerging Black Lives Matter movement here.

Black Lives Matter U.K. had called for a nationwide “shutdown” to protest an array of injustices, including police brutality; racial disparities in arrests, convictions and sentencing; the treatment of immigrants in detention; inadequate mental health services; and a reported increase in hate crimes since Britain’s decision, in a June 23 referendum, to leave the European Union.

“We are here because we have no choice,” Wail Qasim, an activist and journalist who took part in a protest near Heathrow Airport, which serves London, wrote on Twitter. “We are here because this is a crisis.”

The Black Lives Matter movement, which emerged in the United States in 2013, has spread to several countries, including Britain, Canada and France.

On Friday morning, activists unfurled a giant banner and lay down on an access road near Heathrow, bringing traffic to a standstill for several hours. The police arrested 10 people.

Five more people were arrested in Birmingham, Britain’s second-most populous city, after blocking traffic leading to the airport. Four activists were arrested in Nottingham, a city of more than 300,000 in the Midlands, after protesters blocked trams and buses by lying down in front of the Theatre Royal.

The demonstrations were peaceful but powerful; in several cases, the authorities had to use special equipment to cut through the tubes the protesters had used to link their arms.

The demonstrations were timed to coincide with the fifth anniversary, on Thursday, of the fatal police shooting of Mark Duggan, a 29-year-old unarmed black man, in the Tottenham section of London. His deathtouched off riots in poorer sections of the capital, as well as in cities including Birmingham, Bristol and Liverpool.

In January 2014, an inquest jury found that the killing of Mr. Duggan had been justified, finding it more likely than not that he had tossed a firearm from a taxi shortly before he was shot. But in October, a judge granted Mr. Duggan’s family the right to appeal those findings.

The 2011 riots echoed disturbances that shook the Brixton neighborhood of London no fewer than three times — in 1981, 1985 and 1995 — in response to anger at police treatment of black residents…

British Lawmaker Assasinated

Seems we aren’t the only country with whack-jobs. Just that ours are better armed with military weapons and can kill dozens.

British lawmaker dies following shooting and stabbing attack that stuns nation

A member of Britain’s Parliament was shot and stabbed to death Thursday in an attack that stunned the nation and brought to an immediate halt the country’s European Union referendum campaign just a week before the vote.

Police did not provide a motive for the killing. But British media organizations including the Guardian and Sky News quoted witnesses as saying that the assailant shouted “Britain First!” during and after the attack — a slogan linked to anti-immigrant groups.

Police officials in the northern English region of West Yorkshire said Jo Cox, a 41-year-old member of the center-left Labour Party who has been outspoken in advocating for civilian victims in Syria, was pronounced an hour after she was assaulted outside a library near the city of Leeds.

Police officials said they believed that a 52-year-old man who was taken into custody was responsible for the attack, and they did not believe there were accomplices.

Witnesses told British media that the assailant appeared to have been waiting for Cox outside a library in the town of Birstall where she had been meeting constituents. He targeted her with a gun that was either homemade or antique, as well as with a knife. He continued to stab and kick her even after she had fallen to the ground, bleeding.

Cox was taken by helicopter to a hospital in Leeds. Before her death was announced, Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt tweeted that staff members at Leeds General Infirmary were “doing everything possible.”

The killing shook Britain to the core, and prompted an outpouring of grief from across the political spectrum.

Gun attacks in Britain are rare, and members of Parliament do not customarily have security protection. British gun control restrictions are extremely tight, and firearms are considered difficult to obtain.

Britain First is the name of a far-right group that stages provocative anti-Muslim demonstrations. Following Thursday’s attack, the organization posted a statement on its website denying involvement, and saying it “would never encourage behavior of this sort.”

British Parliament Debates Banning Trump From UK

What a brilliant idea! Apparently in the UK, their Congress (AKA Parliament) can be petitioned to debate changes in the laws by Citizen Petition. Ergo when a petition reached s over 100,000 signatures it has to be taken up by Parliament for consideration.

Sadly that won’t work in this country – as you have to have an intelligent, educated populace, who minimally is aware of civics, knows something about how the government works, the bill of rights, and is committed to the success of he country – meaning the Sarah Palinites, and Don Trumpskies who pride themselves on ignorance, not being educated, and living in a fantasy world apart form know reality, and knowledgeable of nothing but the Second Amendment f^&()ed that one up for the rest of us as well.

The Dumpster as an illegal alien.

Why British Parliament Will Debate Banning Donald Trump From The U.K.

The British Parliament will now debate whether to ban Donald Trump from entering the country after a petition to keep him out rapidly gained over almost 200,000 signatures Wednesday.

The British Parliament debates petitions once they surpass 100,000 signatures.

“The U.K. has banned entry to many individuals for hate speech,” the petition’s description says.

Scottish resident and longtime Trump critic Suzanne Kelly started the petition, which 30,000 people signed in less than an hour Wednesday morning. Kelly condemned Trump for “unrepentant hate speech and unacceptable behavior” that “foments racial, religious and nationalistic intolerance which should not be welcome in the U.K.”

Britain’s Chancellor George Osborne recommended Wednesday engaging in “robust and democratic debate” instead of banning him from entry.

Yet several British politicians are on board. Labour Party lawmaker Jack Dromey warned that the “dangerous fool” should not come “within 1,000 miles of our shores.” The Muslim Council of Britain echoed the call and recommended that Parliament apply the same standards to Trump as they would to others who “espouse hatred.” Sarah Wollaston, a Member of Parliament for the ruling Conservative Party, recommended a “serious discussion.” Labor MP Tulip Siddiq, a Muslim, said, “If you’re not going to welcome people like me into your country, thenwe don’t want to welcome you.”

Trump caused an uproar when he proclaimed Monday that the U.S. should enact a “complete shutdown” of Muslim immigration. He also alleged that certain neighborhoods of Paris and London were so radicalized that “police are afraid for their own lives.”

London Metropolitan Police rebuked Trump’s claim, saying he “could not be more wrong.” London Mayor Boris Johnson slammed the comments as “complete and utter nonsense.”

Leaving America

If you have a chance to travel to Europe, check out the local TV. The Ads, particularly on British TV are 10 cuts above most of what you will see in America. This is the new British Stansbury Christmas Ad which is making waves felt in the US already – If you are a cat owner, you probably will recognize a little of Mog in your own cat.

Department Store John Lewis is known for some of the best ads annually. This certainly beats the hell out of the jingle driven drivel presented on US TV –

This one from the Lottery company in Spain. It engages the watcher by telling a story in one minute –

And this from German Grocer LIDL and it’s “Christmas Class”

Apparently, the concept of grabbing the audience with quality over quantity sailed over our advertiser’s heads. As advertisers on cable now chew up 20 minutes of an hour program – maybe these clowns could learn something about why folks are increasingly buying ad blockers and watch commercial free on the Internet. Familiarity, in terms of ceaselessly being bombarded with the same poorly constructed information indeed breeds contempt.

First Houston…Now London

Four black women, upscale club in London…

No admission.

What Went Down The Night 4 Black Women Were Denied Entry At A UK Nightclub

A group of black women claim that the club denied their friends entry for being “too dark” and “overweight.”

Men and women across the United Kingdom are speaking out about a popular upscale London nightclub that allegedly denied entry to a group of four black women on Saturday night for being “too dark” and “overweight.”

Zalika Miller, 26, told The Huffington Post that a promoter for the club invited her friend Lin Mei, 29, to DSTRKT — a West End night club frequented by high-profile celebrities — for a party Saturday night. In a statement Miller provided to HuffPost on behalf of the group, Mei said that she told the promoter that she wanted to bring three friends. Mei, who is biracial, said he asked what her friends looked like.

“He made reference to black girls, being harder to gain entry,” Mei said.  So she sent photos of her friends to the promoters.

“He said, you know, if you’re going to bring dark skin girls, they need to be extra hot so Lin basically sent in the pictures to say, look, my friends are hot, they’re pretty,” Miller said. “He saw the pictures so I guess he basically gave his approval to say ‘yea come down.'”

Miller and Mei, who said they had been the club on prior occasions, arrived early that evening along with their friends Tasha Campbell, 28, and Reshia McFarlame-Tapping, 27. Mei said they arrived on the earlier side, around 10 p.m., to ensure they would be able to get in. Instead, they were denied entry.

They allege that security told them that the table for the promoter they were in contact with was at capacity, though Mei said it was her understanding that he hadn’t arrived yet. They claim they raised the issue to the promoter when they noticed other women enter after they were denied, who told them that club staff at the entry were lying. Mei said in the statement:

“[He] then called me and stated Ugo Allessio [the manager, according to Mei] needs to see all girls so line up across the road against the wall so he can see what sort of girls they are and what they looked like. When I told the girls they were disgusted.”

Mei said after the promoter spoke with the door person to try to get them in, he told her they were denied entry because her friends were “too dark” and “overweight:”

Driver to Police – ‘There’s nothing to discuss. I’m going home.’ Worlds Slowest Police Chase…

A police “Chase” slow enough for an officer to walk beside the fleeing miscreant?

I think this one beats the OJ slow motion chase!

Low-velocity: Caroline Turner's Ford Fiesta, which she used for the 'chase'

The Getaway Car - a Ford Fiesta

Farce of 76-year-old who led police on 27-mile car chase at 10mph… which only ended when officer ran up and tapped on the window

A grandmother led traffic police on a surreal 17-mile chase – at speeds of less than 10mph.

Caroline Turner was finally stopped after more than an hour when patrol cars formed a rolling road block and an officer got out and ran alongside her, telling her to pull over.

The 76-year-old had been spotted driving the wrong way around a roundabout.

She then entered a dual carriageway but refused to pull over even though a following police car had switched on its flashing blue lights.

Officers say that even at its fastest, the pursuit never went above 20mph.

When the policeman jogging alongside shouted at the pensioner to pull over, she initially refused, saying: ‘There’s nothing to discuss. I’m going home.’

She was finally brought to a halt on the hard shoulder, however, where she was arrested and put in a cell overnight as officers feared she might cause a fatal accident if allowed to go free.

Turner appeared before magistrates in Colchester, Essex, the following day and was banned from driving for a year.

She was also fined £100 after admitting driving without due care and attention and failing to stop for police…

The pensioner insisted her experience had not put her off driving. ‘I am planning for my re-test already,’ she said. ‘But for the next year I am going to be catching buses.

Modern Slavery Ring Busted in England

What is amazing is the perpetrators of this one got away with it for years despite 28 former captives coming forward to alert the authorities…

Slaves held for 15 years in kennels and horse boxes

Four men and a woman were being questioned by detectives today after 24 slaves were discovered living in dog kennels, sheds and horse boxes in one of the worst cases of modern day slavery ever discovered.

More than 200 officers swooped on the Greenacres travellers’ site in Leighton Buzzard during the early hours of yesterday morning and found the large group of men living in squalid conditions.

The raid was launched as part of a long-running investigation by Bedfordshire Police which suggested the men were being held against their will in poor conditions at the site, and forced to work for no pay. Read the rest of this entry »

BBC Has a Mexico Problem

Mexicans rage over racist remarks on BBC

Well..SO much for Land Rover sales in Mexico…

Thanks to some racist anti-Mexican comments on the BBC car show “Top Gear,” Britain is suddenly being viewed as more xenophobic than their northern neighbor.

“Top Gear” presenters made the controversial remarks after pulling up an internet photo of a Mexican-made sports car.

After some childish guffaws, presenter Richard Hammond launched into his rant.

“Why would you want a Mexican car? Because cars reflect national characteristics don’t they,” Hammond said. “Mexican cars are just going to be lazy, feckless, flatulent, overweight, leaning against a fence asleep looking at a cactus with a blanket with a hole in the middle on as a coat.”

Then to add insult to injury, co-presenter Jeremy Clarkson personally attacked the Mexican ambassador.

“We won’t get any complaints about this because at the Mexican embassy the ambassador’s going to be sitting there with a remote control like this,” Clarkson said, slumping in the chair, snoring.

Clarkson was wrong about that one. Mexican Ambassador Eduardo Medina Mora wrote a letter demanding an apology.

“The presenters of the program resorted to outrageous, vulgar and inexcusable insults to stir bigoted feelings against the Mexican people, their culture, as well as their official representative in the United Kingdom,” he wrote.

“Although casual banter is an essential component of the program’s appeal, humor never justifies xenophobia. It is not a matter of taste but of basic principles.”

Within hours of Medina Mora sending the letter, the spat was going viral on the internet. In today’s globalized world, a racist comment will quickly go back to its homeland.

Mexican news websites displayed the story on their front pages to thousands of irate comments flooding in.

“These people are uncultured and ignorant. Surely, they have never seen the beauty in our country,” wrote someone identified as Moody on the website of El Universal. “How sad that they live with people from all over the world (in Britain) and they act like Hitler on the television.”

The story was also rapidly picked up by English-language media the world over, to more hot debate. One British car dealer in Mexico wrote that many customers had canceled appointments over the show.

Dating Uglies

Ugly Betty From the TV Series

This one kind of blew me away. First off, where do you find folks who are willing to put their names out there on a site dedicated to Ugly People Dating. And second, beautiful or ugly in terms of matches between folks seems to me to be highly subjective, and completely in the eye of the beholder.

Ugly People Get Their Own Dating Site

Talk about a niche dating site. TheUglyBugBall.co.uk launched on Monday as the first online dating site only for ugly people in the U.K. It claims to “deal in reality,” is free to join and filled with 1,500 unattractive people who want to, um, bump uglies. First of all, that’s the best name for a website ever. Second of all, founder Howard James’ quote is the funniest ever: “It’s a sad fact that up to half of the UK is made up of ugly people yet amazingly nobody has ever thought of providing a dating service for them.” The rules are strict: attractive singletons are not allowed!

But isn’t a dating site for “the aesthetically challenged” kind of … wrong?

True, they are a self-selecting group, who willingly put themselves on there. And I suppose some singletons would feel like it’s easier to date among a pool where everyone has lowered expectations about physical appearances. I’m troubled, though, because “ugliness” and “attractiveness” are so subjective. The idea that some people may define themselves as being “ugly,” if they’re not really at peace with it (i.e., not embracing it in the empowering way some people have embraced slurs like “gay” or “slut”), seems exploitative. Why would society want to encourage people to identify themselves like that?

The site itself makes a lot of downright untrue — not to mention cruel — assumptions about “ugly” people. Try: “Ugly people are a better calibre of human—pretty people generally aren’t very nice and are often a bit shallow.” And: “Ugly people have had a tougher life and therefore tend to be more considerate and more loyal. A recent survey [on the site] also proved that they try harder in bed.” And this gem: “Ugly people have lower expectations – for a first date a Family Bucket will usually do the trick.” So guys, don’t bother wooing an “ugly” woman or treating her like she’s a human being! Just buy her a bucket of fried chicken and she’ll be grateful.

Gross.

There’s also the question of how “ugly” do you have to be to join. What are the qualifiers? Weight? The size of your nose? Facial deformities? Skin color? It seems to me this would just contribute to sizeismracism, ableism, etc. Even if it’s a self-selecting group who joins, it saddens me that the online dating pools — which can already be a vicious meat market — are further subdividing in a way that doesn’t challenge notions of beauty.

Satellites to issue speeding tickets from space

UK drivers had better stay under that speed limit, because the traffic authorities are watching… from outer space. According to The Telegraph, an American company called PIPS Technology has developed a system that uses two cameras on the ground and one mounted on a satellite in orbit to catch speeders.

The system – called “SpeedSpike” – figures your average speed between two points, captures an image of your license plate and reports you if you’re going faster than the law allows. Oh, and if you’re hoping Great Britain’s notoriously gray weather will save you, you’re out of luck; the system works even when it’s cloudy or dark.

SpeedSpike will be tested in two places: the London borough of Southwark, and along the A374 between Torpoint and Anthony in Cornwall. If the trial is successful, the tech may be used to enforce speed limits near schools, to reduce the need for speed bumps, and for “main road enforcement for traffic reduction.”

Damn – There goes the neighborhood!
