Sen. Tim Scott Responds To John Kelly: ‘No Compromise To Make’ On Civil War

The White House chief of staff said the war was caused by the inability to compromise.

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) seemingly chided White House chief of staff John Kelly on Tuesday after the former Marine Corps general claimed that the Civil War was caused by the inability to compromise.

“We need to stop relitigating and referencing the Civil War as if there was some moral conundrum,” Scott, the sole black Senate Republican, said in a statement. “There was no compromise to make – only a choice between continuing slavery and ending it. We need to move forward together, instead of letting the divisions of the past continue to force us apart.”

Kelly on Monday said a “lack of ability to compromise led to the Civil War” and called the removal of Confederate monuments a “dangerous” scrubbing of history. The senior Donald Trump aide made the comments during an interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, who asked his thoughts about the removal of two plaques honoring President George Washington and Gen. Robert E. Lee at a church in Alexandria, Virginia.

“I would tell you that Robert E. Lee was an honorable man,” Kelly said during the interview.

“He was a man that gave up his country to fight for his state, which, 150 years ago, was more important than country,” he added. “It was always loyalty to state first back in those days. Now it’s different today. But the lack of an ability to compromise led to the Civil War. And men and women of good faith on both sides made their stand where their conscience had to make their stand.”

number of U.S. historians have criticized Kelly’s comments about the Civil War, calling them “strange,” “sad,” and “wrong.” Stephanie McCurry, a history professor at Columbia University, told The Washington Post that Kelly’s comments echoed talking points of a “pro-Confederate view of the Civil War.”

Tim Scott – The “Smart” Black Republican… Gets Stupid

Congressman Tim Scott of South Carolina has been hailed by many as the “smart” black Republican so far, for his refusal to prostitute himself with the sort of Lawn Jockey antics of Alan West of Florida – or Herman Cain.

Here, he jumps off a cliff, claiming he would seek to impeach President Obama for following the 14th Amendment.

THAT’s STOOOOOOOOPID!

And Tim Scott should have the IQ not to go there.

Whether the disputed clause in the 14th Amendment –

“The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law…shall not be questioned.”

is applicable or not is a Constitutional question. In no way, other than in the most brain dead brainwashed conservatives fecund imagination does a Constitutional interpretation issue between the Executive and Legislature reach the “High Crimes and Misdemeanors” bar set for the impeachment of a elected Federal Official…

However – trying to short circuit that conduct of legitimate business by the Government through the illegal and baseless threat of Impeachment…

Might.

Black Caucus Caves

After a week of the typical Republican racial pandering, the Congressional Black Caucus has followed the Democrat tradition…

And turned chicken-isht.

What they should be doing is offering South Carolina Representative Scott a seat at the table…

While challenging Alan West’s legitimacy to hold a seat in Congress.

Criminals and Felons quite simply should not be eligible to hold a seat in Congress.

Black caucus says it will welcome Republicans

The Congressional Black Caucus says it will allow two recently elected black Republicans to join the group if they ask.

The all-Democratic caucus had wavered over the issue since Tim Scott of South Carolina and Allen West of Florida were elected last week. Chairwoman Barbara Lee had pointed to the group’s liberal mission statement as a potential point of conflict.

But in a statement Tuesday, the group said the two would be welcomed if they request membership.

West has said he wants to join to bring a new perspective to the group. Scott hasn’t decided.

The 42-member caucus has had two Republican members in its four-decade history. The most recent black Republican in Congress, J.C. Watts of Oklahoma, declined to join.

The black caucus includes a handful of moderates but is mostly made up of liberals serving in safe Democratic districts. The addition of Republicans would likely shake up its weekly meetings and require its leaders to navigate around them to discuss strategy.

West, a former Army officer, said in an interview he’s eager to steer the group away from “failing liberal social welfare policies that have caused the demise of the black community.”

West said the black caucus must confront overwhelming issues in the African-American community including high teen pregnancy, incarceration and unemployment rates. Those are issues that require “competence and character,” not the caucus’ “monolithic voice that continues to promote victimization and dependence.”

West defeated Democratic Rep. Ron Klein despite opposition from African-American Democrats such as Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida.
