Serena Williams Hospitalized, and Undergoes Surgery

Get well!
Serena Williams Undergoes Emergency Surgery

Serena - Looking hot at the Elton John Benefit

Tennis star Serena Williams suffered a pulmonary embolism Monday and was rushed into emergency surgery, her rep toldPEOPLE.

“Monday Serena Williams underwent emergency treatment at Cedars for a hematoma she suffered as a result of treatment for a more critical situation,” her rep, Nicole Chabot, said in a statement.

Williams, 29, looked fabulous on the red carpet at Sunday’s Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party, just days after serveral sighting at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Chabot confirmed the famed tennis player’s injury after Monday’s scary ordeal.

“Last week, Serena suffered from a pulmonary embolism [a blood clot in the lungs] which was discovered upon her return to L.A. She had been in New York for doctor appointments for the ongoing issues with her foot,” the statement continued. “Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications.”

Does Wembledon Have a Secret “R”?

Serena Williams Wimbledon 2008 - 2.jpgWhat’s the deal here? The Queen of England deigns to visit Wembledon for the first time in 33 years…

And they pull arguably the best Women’s tennis player in the world, reigning Wimbledon Singles Champion,  3 time Wembledon Champ, and 12 time Grand Slam Champion…  Off the court…

And replace her with a nobody?

And as well as the Queen got on with Michelle Obama earlier this year…

It “ain’t” the Queen making this call.

It’s not only an insult to Venus Williams… It’s an insult to the Queen.

Wimbledon Does Serena Royal Disservice

(or the Queen of England visits Wembledon, only to be presented with a backbencher.)

WIMBLEDON, England — This is an insult. Serena Williams was even practicing her curtsy in preparation for playing tennis in front of the Queen, who will attend Wimbledon Thursday for the first time in 33 years.

It’s a special moment for a special tournament, but the most special women’s player going Thursday, Williams, was pushed out to Court 2. The Queen will be watching at Centre Court.

This is just wrong. And I can’t stand it when players grumble about the indignity of being put out on far away courts, as if they deserve more. But this time, with the Queen coming in, court placement matters. And Serena Williams deserves the honor.

To move the best player in the world and defending champion who, with her sister Venus, has dominated Wimbledon for a decade, is not an accident. It is a message, but I don’t know, and am even a little afraid of, what that message is. Read the rest of this entry »

Serena Meltdown

Anyone old enough to remember John McEnroe’s famous tirades shouldn’t be too surprised at tennis pros behaving badly. Venus takes herself out of the match with the tirade.

This one by Serena Williams will be a classic –

It is extraordinarily rare that a minor foot fault is called at this level of a match. However, Serena’s behavior was over the top.

Could The Miami Dolphins Finally Get Some Top-Spin?

Serena and Venus Williams are in preliminary talks to become part owners of the Miami Dolphins NFL Franchise. If they do so, they will become the first black owners of an NFL Franchise. Not sure of the assertion that such will add to the Williams Sister’s advertising branding – especially in view that they are in an entirely different sport. Perhaps the sister’s winning ways will rub off on the hapless Dolphins?

Serena Williams and her sister Venus are in preliminary talks to become part-owners of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins, the 11-time grand slam winner confirmed on Wednesday.

“There have been preliminary talks and hopefully it will work out,” Serena Williams told reporters after her second round win over Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova at the Toronto Cup. “That would be a great opportunity for both of us.

“We’ll see what happens, you never know.”

If they did acquire a stake in the Dolphins, the Williams sisters would join musicians Jimmy Buffet and Gloria and Emilio Estefan, who became minority partners in the team earlier this year.miami_dolphins_bg

Buffett, owner of Margaritaville Enterprises, signed a deal in May, which includes the team’s stadium being renamed after his LandShark Lager beer for the 2009 season.

The Williams, who live in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, are not described as big NFL fans but view the Dolphins as a vehicle to promote themselves.

“Venus and I are always trying to expand our brand,” said Williams. “If the opportunity presents itself we would love to see where it can take us.
