Corrine Brown sentenced to 5 years in federal prison

A federal judge in Jacksonville on Monday sentenced former Democratic Rep. Corrine Brown to five years in federal prison after she was convicted last May on corruption charges for her role in using a scam charity to bilk donors and use the money for personal expenses, the Florida Times-Union reported.

The 71-year-old disgraced congresswoman’s chief of staff, Ronnie Simmons, got 48 months in prison, while the founder of the charity, One Door for Education President Carla Wiley, received a 21-month sentence for her role.

U.S. District Judge Timothy Corrigan said Brown abused the public trust to carry out a criminal conspiracy, the newspaper reported.

“This is a sad day for everyone,” said Corrigan after sentencing Brown to prison. “I was impressed with all the outpouring of support for you, and I think it’s a tribute to all the work you’ve done over the years. That’s what makes this all the more tragic.”

“This was a crime born of entitlement and greed, committed to supporting a lifestyle that was beyond their means,” said Corrigan. “Just think of the good that could have been done with that money if it would have been used for its intended purpose.”

Brown was also given three years probation. Brown’s attorney says her client plans to file an appeal.

The prison sentence marks the end of a legendary figure in Florida politics.

In 1992, Brown, of Jacksonville, was the first African-American from Florida to be elected to Congress since Reconstruction. She was best known for her slogan “Corrine Delivers,” a nod to the fact that she had knack for securing federal funding for her district.

In the 2016 Democratic primary, she was defeated by former state Sen. Al Lawson. The corruption case haunted her on the campaign trail. Her loss was also attributed to the fact that she joined state Republicans in opposing changes to her 5th Congressional District, which became a national poster child for gerrymandering. For years, the district snaked from Orlando to Jacksonville, picking up pockets of black communities and cities along the way. The seat was politically good for Brown, but made the surrounding congressional districts whiter and more Republican-leaning.

After a lengthy court battle over the newly drawn seats, Brown’s congressional district was redrawn to stretch east-west from Jacksonville to the Tallahassee region. It’s still overwhelmingly Democratic, but Brown departed from near Democratic consensus to oppose the changes because it lowered the number of black voters in the seat.

John Lewis -“Trump is Illegitimate”

Wow…He went there. This probably means a lot of other folks, who aren’t speaking out – are there too.

To hear a sitting ranking senior politician say this…Is Earth shaking.

John Lewis on Trump: ‘I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president’

Rep. John Lewis, the Georgia Democrat and civil rights icon, says he does not see Donald Trump as a legitimate president.

“I believe in forgiveness. I believe in trying to work with people,” Lewis told NBC’s Chuck Todd in a segment set to air Sunday on “Meet the Press.” “It’s going to be hard. It’s going to be very difficult. I don’t see this president-elect as a legitimate president.”

Lewis argued that the suspected efforts of Russian hackers to tilt the election in Trump’s favor are evidence of “a conspiracy on the part of the Russians and others to help him get elected.”

“I think the Russians participated in helping this man get elected,” Lewis said when asked why he does not believe Trump to be legitimate. “And they helped destroy the candidacy of Hillary Clinton.”

According to U.S. intelligence officials, Russian hackers waged cyberattacks on top Democratic Party officials during the campaign in an attempt to disrupt the election. As a result of the hacks, thousands of internal emails from the Democratic National Committee and Clinton’s campaign chairman, John Podesta, were published on the website WikiLeaks, repeatedly embarrassing the campaign.

“It’s not right, that’s not fair,” Lewis said of the hacking. “It’s not the open, democratic process.”

As Todd told Lewis in the segment, the congressman’s statement is sure to “send a big message to a lot of people in this country.” Lewis is widely admired among Democrats, and many liberals remain despondent about Clinton’s upset loss to Trump. As Trump’s critics refuse to come around to him, his approval ratings remain very low.

Thousands of people are expected to protest Trump’s inauguration next Friday. Lewis, for his part, said he will not be attending the ceremony: “It will be the first one that I miss since I’ve been in Congress,” he said. “You cannot be at home with something that you feel that is wrong, is not right.”

Grandson of US Representative Danny Davis Shot and KIlled

Condolences to Rep Davis and his family….

WTF can’t these scumbag hardheads murder some Trump supporters aand do something of value for the community?

Grandson of U.S. House member fatally shot in Chicago home invasion

U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, D-Ill., said his 15-year-old grandson, Jovan Wilson, was shot in and killed in a home invasion, possibly over a pair of gym shoes. The teen was at home when two assailants broke into the home and shot him in the head

The 15-year-old grandson of U.S. Rep. Danny Davis was shot in the head and killed Friday, possibly in a dispute over gym shoes.

Chicago police said Jovan Wilson was in his home in Englewood when two armed assailants forced their way into the home about 6:45 p.m. The teen and the assailants argued, police said. The teen was shot in the head. Davis, a longtime House member who represents Illinois’ 7th Congressional District, was not at the home.

“That dispute escalated and turned physical and one of the offenders pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the head,” said Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi, adding the incident may have sparked in a dispute over sneakers.

Davis had just returned to the Chicago area from Washington, D.C., when he learned of the shooting. He said a 17-year-old girl and 15-year-old boy were behind the home invasion. No arrests have been made.

“Initially it was that he had been shot and then actually the police commander called me and indicated that, there during a home invasion, he had been shot and it didn’t look good,” Davis said.

“Immediately I simply left and came out to the area where it had taken place,” Davis said. “It’s totally disconcerting.”

Davis said his grandson was a typical teen who loved sports and music.

“He liked basketball. If you listened to him he was a basketball star, but he liked basketball and music. All those kinds of things. He was an avid sports fan, he knew all about, you know, the stats of different players,” he said.

Gun violence has increased in the Chicago area in 2016 to levels not seen since the 1990s. The city has had 643 murders through Nov. 6. That’s a 55 percent increase over the same period last year.

Rep. Keith Ellison – “Like Chickens for Col Sanders”

Maybe Keith better come up with a new like… Like “Uncle Akmed”?

Muslim Rep. Keith Ellison: ‘Muslims who support Trump is like chickens for Colonel Sanders’

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) — the first Muslim elected to Congress — denounced the idea that Donald Trump would win many Muslim voters over on Tuesday, The Hill reported.

“Muslims who support Trump is like chickens for Colonel Sanders, you know what I mean?” Ellison said during an event hosted by the National Press Club.

The Hill had previously reported that Walid Phares, Trump’s head foreign policy advisor, had “quietly opened backchannels” with Muslim-American communities. Phares said many of those interactions were prompted by Muslim Republicans “seeking additional information” on the Republican candidate’s positions.

“These people know what they want – they’re concerned about the well-being of their communities and believe that Trump has the right economic and social agenda,” Phares said. “But they’re trying to get a handle on how he’ll deal with the Middle East.”

Trump had previously called for a ban on Muslim immigration into the US, but has more recently said it was just a “suggestion.”

Dem Congresswoman, 11 Supporters Shot in Arizona

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords

A Democrat Congresswoman in Arizona who has been the target of harassment and threats by right wingers was shot today while holding a meeting with her constituents. Other reports have that at least one person was killed, one of Rep. Giffords’ staff. Included in the injured were a Federal Judge, and local constituents participating in the meeting.

Reports at this time are conflicting as to whether Rep. Giffords was killed.

This comes on the heels of explosive packages being mailed to Maryland Officials and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano bringing up memories of the Anthrax Murderer who mailed his packages just after the last time Republicans took the majority in Congress. That doesn’t say that Republicans have anything to do with it – but it does draw some parallels to the sort of overheated rhetoric we’ve seen from the Tea Baggers and Republicans – and attempted assassinations and murders.

It is unclear whether or not Police have apprehended the assassin in the Giffords case – so it is impossible at this time to determine motive.

Congresswoman Giffords, others shot in Ariz.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was shot in the head and an unknown number of others were injured Saturday when an assailant sprayed bullets into an area where the lawmaker was meeting with constituents, congressional officials said.

Officials said one victim died soon after the attack, and others were taken to a nearby hospital. They identified the victim as an aide to the congresswoman.

There were conflicting reports on whether Giffords had died.

The officials said those injured included several of Gifford’s aides who were with her at the time.

The officials who described the events did so on condition of anonymity, saying they were not permitted to comment publicly.

FBI officials and local law enforcement were investigating the attack, which took place while Giffords was greeting constituents outside a Safeway grocery store.

Giffords, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting her first “Congress on Your Corner” event in northwest Tucson, NPR reported.

Giffords, 40, is married to U.S. astronaut Mark Kelly. She took office in January 2007, emphasizing issues such as immigration reform, embryonic stem-cell research, alternative energy sources and a higher minimum wage. In November, she edged a tea party favorite.

The Arizona politician’s office had been vandalized last March just hours after the House vote overhauling the health care system, The New York Times reported.
