The Tea Party – Post Racial? Not a chance!

A study of the Tea Party recently indicated yes, indeed – it is all about race…

…if support for the Tea Party is truly a proxy for conservatism, the relationship between racial resentment and support for the Tea Party should evaporate once we control for conservatism. Otherwise, there’s something else going on with support for the Tea Party; it’s not just conservatism. To make things a little easier, we combined all of the items (questions) that comprise racial resentment, making them into a scale.

As the figure shows, even as we account for conservatism and partisanship, support for the Tea Party remains a valid predictor of racial resentment. We’re not saying that ideology isn’t important, because it is: as people become more conservative, it increases by 23 percent the chance that they’re racially resentful. Also, Democrats are 15 percent less likely than Republicans to be racially resentful. Even so, support for the Tea Party makes one 25 percent more likely to be racially resentful than those who don’t support the Tea Party.

Trying to Outrun Race

Racist. Tea Party.

Are those separate concepts or a single one? Depends on whom you ask.

According to an article accompanying a Washington Post/ABC News poll released on Wednesday: “About 61 percent of tea party opponents say racism has a lot to do with the movement, a view held by just 7 percent of tea party supporters.”

This gulf of perception has left Tea Party organizers struggling to scrub the stain of racism from its image, but those efforts may fly in the face of the facts.

On Thursday, Amy Kremer, the director of the Tea Party Express, sat down on “The View.” Prompted to disavow supporters who might be motivated by racism, she looked into the camera and said: “This is not a racist movement. We don’t want you here. Go away if that’s what you’re about. We’re about the fiscal issues and about being American.”

There’s no reason to doubt her sincerity, but there seems to be a gap between things as they are and things as she would have them. Read the rest of this entry »

If It Quacks Like a Duck… Conservatism and Whining About Being Identified as Racist

This is one of two videos by conservative talk jock Alex Jones. Now, conservatives have dominated the radio air waves since shortly after Raygun killed the Fairness Doctrine, and the FCC began loosening rules on station ownership allowing radio stations to be consolidated as Right Wing propaganda outlets under a few owners. The ability to propagandize their talking points 24 x 7 over the airwaves without criticism, or offering up opposing viewpoints has been a foundation of the success of the Republican Party and the spread of conservatism.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

That is beginning to change. And the fear is palpable among conservative commentators who have ramped up vitriolic, and often racist commentary in an attempt to rally the base listenership. This particular conservative, tries and make the rather weak point, that anyone calling conservative commentary “racist”, even when it is racist – is violating the First Amendment Rights and is dragging the country into a totalitarian state.
