Trumps automatic response to any criticism has been to come back swinging. While is has been sometimes successful, especially against other candidates – it has also resulted in some huge losses…AKA Megyn Kelly.

The current version of that is to go after the Pope, who in current incarnation the job is filled by a pretty likeable guy who is making a lot of inroads around the world in sometimes, unexpected places. Furthermore Donald, I kind of hate to be the first one to tell you this…But in this case, the Pope actually IS Holier than thou.

Donald Trump just flung this insane rant at Pope Francis — and maybe just lost the presidency

Donald Trump has responded to Pope Francis, who on Thursday said the GOP candidate was not a Christian because of his comments about immigrants.

“If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS’s ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been President because this would not have happened,” a statement on his website reads. “ISIS would have been eradicated unlike what is happening now with our all talk, no action politicians.”

Pope Francis had criticized Trump’s rhetoric earlier today while finishing up his trip through Mexico, saying that, “A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not of building bridges, is not Christian. This is not the gospel.”

Trump lashed out at the Pope for questioning his Christian faith.

“For a religious leader to question a person’s faith is disgraceful,” he wrote. (Uhhhhh…Ignoring the “Obama Exception” here, Donald? Sort of like this – Cruz-loving End Times pastor uses numerology to prove Obama sacrificed Scalia in pagan ritual) “I am proud to be a Christian and as President I will not allow Christianity to be consistently attacked and weakened, unlike what is happening now, with our current President. (The old “Obama is a Muslim scam?) No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith. (Except if that religious leader is a white, racist, fundamentalist …In which case it’s OK)They are using the Pope as a pawn and they should be ashamed of themselves for doing so, especially when so many lives are involved and when illegal immigration is so rampant.” (Hate to tell you this #2. More Mexicans have left the US to go home than have come here the last 8 years…)

Francis isn’t the only one to call Trump’s faith into question. Trump has bungled Bible quotes and verses in the past in efforts to charm religious voters.

Furthermore, characterizing undocumented border crossing as “rampant” flies in the face of reality, as immigration across the southern border is at a low and many of those crossing are fleeing violence, according to the LA Times.

Nevertheless, Trump has made talk about building a bigger wall — which he implausibly says Mexico will pay for — along the southern border his go-to crowd pleaser.

Francis stopped short of telling Catholic voters who to choose, but did say, “I would only say that this man is not Christian if he has said things like that.”

Benetton ‘Unhate’ Campaign Shows World Leaders Kissing

There’s no doubt that these are the pictures of the day. U.S. President Barack Obama kissing his Venezuelan counterpart Hugo Chavez, Mahmoud Abbas embracing Benjamin Netanyahu, and Germany’s Angela Merkel locking lips with Nicolas Sarkozy. Is this bad fan fiction? A new approach to international diplomacy?

The stunning (albeit photoshopped) images are part of a new campaign by the United Colors of Benetton. Alessandro Benetton, executive deputy chairman, who presented the ads in Paris on Wednesday, said they were meant to promote the idea of “unhate,” The Times Of India writes. “The images are very strong, but we have to send a strong message. We are not wanting to be disrespectful of the leaders … we consider them “conception figures” making a statement of brotherhood with a kiss,” he reportedly said.

Benetton hopes the campaign will contribute to the creation of a culture of tolerance and combat hatred, the group writes. It plans a series of live actions in which young people will post the images of the smooching world leaders “on the walls of locations symbolic of the desperately-needed peace process: Tel Aviv, New York, Rome, Milan, Paris.”

There have already been fierce reactions to the controversial shots. According to the Belgian news channel RTL, President of the Italian Association for Catholic Viewers Luca Borgomeo asked for the immediate withdrawal of the campaign. “Is it possible that RTL can’t think of anything better?” he said, according to a HuffPost translation.

“The White House has a longstanding policy disapproving of the use of the president’s name and likeness for commercial purposes,” White House spokesman Eric Schultz told The Huffington Post.

Benetton is known for its controversial ads, including one of a young nun kissing a priest.

Vatican: You Cannot Confess by iPhone

So much for instant absolution: The Vatican today emphatically stressed that Catholics cannot confess by iPhone, one day after news of the “Confession: A Roman Catholic App” emerged, reports the AFP. “It is essential to understand that the rites of penance require a personal dialogue between penitents and their confessor. It cannot be replaced by a computer application,” said a Vatican spokesman. Should that not be clear enough: “I must stress to avoid all ambiguity, under no circumstance is it possible to ‘confess by iPhone’.”

It’s worth noting, however, that the company that created it did explain that the app—approved for use by Catholics by an Indiana bishop—walks users through the process of confessing and offers a “personalized examination of conscience,” but did not say that it replaced the confessing-to-a-priest part.

Mel Gibson’s Dad — The Pope is a ‘Homosexual’

TMZ has obtained a new Gibson recording — this one featuring Mel’s father on a talk radio show this weekend … blasting the Catholic Church and declaring that Pope Benedict is a “homosexual.”

Hutton Gibson — a 91-year-old former “Jeopardy” grand champion — went on the Political Cesspool Radio Program to discuss the issues involving the Catholic Church.

During the interview, Hutton is asked if he believes the Catholic Church has been
“politicized” to the point where they can’t address controversial issues such as homosexuality.

Hutton responds, “It’s not willing to do so because half of the people there in the Vatican are queer.”

When asked if he thinks Benedict is a homosexual, Hutton replies, “I certainly do … why else would he put up with this” … adding, “He’s a slippery character.”

But there’s more — Hutton also claims the Pope is part of a Masonic conspiracy hell-bent on destroying the church from within.

FYI — Hutton is a regular attendee at Mel Gibson‘s mega-church in Malibu.

 

Whackjobs and Terrorists, Part 1

Nutcases seem to abound this Christmas season. First there is the case of the “mentally disturbed” woman attacking the Pope at Christmas Mass –

Turns out the same woman attempted to attack the Pope in 2007 –

This certainly isn’t the first (or second) time a modern Pope has been attacked, in 1981 Pope John Paul II was attacked by a sniper and shot 4 times. This nearly successful assassination attempt led to the creation of the “Popemobile” a truck with an armored glass enclosure protecting the Pope in parades and travels.

Like politicians, it is difficult to secure religious leaders, whose role by definition take them into public locations and large crowds. This is the second attack of a prominent figure in Italy (ok, to parse borders the Vatican is a separate country) in the last month – with Italian Premire Silvio Berlusconi being attacked by a man in the crowd at a political rally.

The difference being that if these attacks were conducted in America, on public figures – the attackers would more than likely be armed with guns – raising the potential damage exponentially.

Like any complex problem solutions are difficult and may involve a combination of of partial solutions. What is needed is some way to identify threats like this, before they can take action – one which works within a Constitutional and personal rights framework.
