It’s Baaaaack! The 60’s Afro

Geez, wearing you hair longer is no longer solely the province of us “old guys” who lived through the period when they were de rigeur from a fashion sense…

Eat your heart out Bieber!

Dante De Blasio Named Sixth Most Influential Teen By TIME

TIME magazine named Dante de Blasio the sixth most influential teen of 2013, crowning him New York City’s “latest fashion icon” due to his “now-iconic” afro.

Dante even beat out Malala Yousafzai, Justin Bieber, and Malia Obama.

Back in August, the 15-year-old son of mayor-elect Bill de Blasio appeared in a now famous campaign ad in which he spoke against stop and frisk and the Bloomberg administration. The ad breathed new life into de Blasio’s campaign, and thrust Dante, and his hairdo, into the national spotlight.

Dante’s afro even garnered the praise and envy of President Obama.

Dante’s sister Chiara, however, did not make TIME’s list despite her own campaign ad for her dad, and her awesome collection of headbands.

The Greatest ‘Fro of all time?

That would have to be Angela Davis…

That Racist Strain of Conservatism

Update – Conservative periodical National Review as cut ties with John Derbyshire – firing him this morning.

The bigot crew is at it again – this from John Debyshire who was last run out of the woodwork when he threatened to kill Chelsea Clinton.

White Columnist: Be Smart, Avoid Black People

Conservative columnist John Derbyshire has unleashed a fury of criticism from both the left and right over advice he dispenses in Taki’s Magazine to white and Asian parents. It’s a list of things they should tell their kids to keep them safe from black people, or what he calls the “non-black version” of “the talk.” Samples:

  • “A small cohort of blacks—in my experience, around five percent—is ferociously hostile to whites and will go to great lengths to inconvenience or harm us. A much larger cohort of blacks—around half—will go along passively if the five percent take leadership in some event. They will do this out of racial solidarity, the natural willingness of most human beings to be led, and a vague feeling that whites have it coming.”
  • “Avoid concentrations of blacks not all known to you personally.”
  • “Do not attend events likely to draw a lot of blacks.”
  • “The mean intelligence of blacks is much lower than whites. …” Read the rest of this entry »

Ebony Fashion Fair 2009 Cancelled

Program for the Ebony Fashion Fair 2009 Season

Program for the Ebony Fashion Fair 2009 Season

Dang! You know things are bad when…

They cancel the Ebony Fashion Fair!

This is an institution. My Mom got Ebony Magazine (and Jet) going back 50 years, and this was my favorite (I admit it. It had something to do with the fine models! Damn near as much fun for young inquiring male minds as checking out the middle page in the Jet Mag)…

Annual Ebony Fashion Fair show canceled for 2009 season

The Maynard Institute’s Richard Prince reported the news based on a story jointly produced for the Miami Herald and South Florida Sun-Sentinel:

In another indication of the economic troubles buffeting the Johnson Publishing Co., the publishers of Ebony and Jet magazines are canceling the traveling Ebony Fashion Fair this fall, “after more than 50 years of showcasing the highest caliber of fashion in the industry to mostly African American audiences,” in the words of the Philadelphia Inquirer. “For more than 50 years, Ebony Fashion Fair has been committed to the important efforts of community organizations and have worked together to raise an estimated $55 million in support of local charities,” Linda Johnson Rice, chairman and CEO, said in a statement. “In light of the overall economic challenges that are affecting many, including our potential corporate sponsors, we have arrived at a most difficult decision to cancel Ebony Fashion Fair’s fall 2009 season. “In the coming months, we will develop a new business model to ensure that the show is a mutually beneficial endeavor. Our primary goal is to build Ebony Fashion Fair and our other brands in ways that will continue delivering meaningful insight and inspiration to the African-American community.”

OK – Fun tour of the week! This site offers pictures of every Jet Magazine Cover since 1951! While they aren’t quite sorted as well as they could be – it is a great historical trip. Check out what some of the news items were, and see pictures of folks whose fame never left the 50’s, 60’s. or 70’s.
