So Much for that “Civility” Thing…

Two separate incidents indicate that any “civility” brought forth by the Tuscon Massacre is going to be short lived…

Snub? Boehner Skips Third Obama Invite

Funny thing happens when you become House speaker: Everyone starts parsing your every move for hidden meaning. Such is the case with John Boehner’s rejection of President Obama’s invite to the state dinner tonight with Hu Jintao. For the record, that’s the third official presidential invitation he’s declined, including receptions for Indian and Mexican leaders, notes AOL News. Boehner also turned down Obama’s invite to fly on Air Force One to a Tucson memorial service.

Boehner’s aides say it’s no big deal, that their boss just doesn’t like formal dinners. But “the question becomes whether the speaker, who’s second in line in presidential succession, has a greater responsibility to appear at these kind of events,” writes MSNBC’s First Read blog.

If Boehner isn’t capable of fulfilling the politi-social obligations of his office… Perhaps he needs to join Michael Steele.

Dem Rep. Steve Cohen Likens GOP Health Care Attacks to Nazi Germany

In remarks on the House floor Tuesday night, Democratic Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen likened the Republican attack on health care reform to the propagation of false rhetoric in Nazi Germany.

Cohen, who apparently spoke to a largely empty chamber, was arguing on behalf of health care reform law during floor debate over the GOP’s bill to repeal it.

“They don’t like the truth so they summarily dismiss it,” said Cohen, who is Jewish. “They say it’s a government takeover of health care, a big lie just like [Nazi propagandist Joseph] Goebbels. You say it enough, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, you repeat the lie, and eventually, people believe it. Like blood libel. That’s the same kind of thing.”

“Blood libel” is a historically anti-Semetic term that was used for centuries to accuse Jews of murdering Christian children in order to use their blood in religious ceremonies. The term came back to consciousness last week when Sarah Palin accused the media of “blood libel” over blame following the Tucson shootings.

In his remarks, Cohen warned against the repetition of false information – using the Holocaust to exemplify his point. “The Germans said enough about the Jews and the people believed it and you had the Holocaust,” he railed. “You tell a lie over and over again. And we’ve heard it on this floor: Government takeover of health care.”

“We heard in August 2009 that there were death panels… Everybody agrees now that was a big lie,” Cohen continued. “Just like government takeover of health care is a big lie.”

Bit over the top. Yes the Republicans are lying about health care, Yes they are using the “Big Lie” propaganda technique perfected by Goebbels…

But most of them aren’t Nazis… That would be the Tea Party faction.

The Messenger of Hate, Faux News…Blinks

I think when even Roger Ailes realizes the Assassination attempt on Giffords and murder of 6 people, including a 9 year old girl has set off a reaction by the American public that is both visceral and a potential tidal wave against the hate games these guys have been using to control the electorate…

Fox News Prez Orders Staff: Tone It Down

Fox News President Roger Ailes has warned his staff to tone down right-wing rhetoric as America debates whether political vitriol played a role in the violent attack on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords. “I told all of our guys, ‘Shut up, tone it down, make your argument intellectually. You don’t have to do it with bombast,'” Ailes said in an interview with Global Grind. “I hope the other side does that as well,” he added. That’s not to say Ailes is buying the argument that harsh political attacks or Sarah Palin’s map marking Giffords’ district with crosshairs had anything to do with the deadly attack by suspected gunman Jared Lee Loughner.

To get a feel for what it is like on the groound in Arizona – one of the local papers:

Arizona’s enemy: The Collective Consciousness of Hate

Just an overview of the State of Hate in Arizona.

This Graphic ties some of the bits and pieces of what is going on in Arizona together. Like a lot of places, you have a cozy relationship between the Republican Party, Republican Candidates, and the Tea Party with fringe hate groups including the neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and the splinter racist Minuteman Militias.

What has happened in Arizona is that these groups – sometimes directly in the statehouse as legislative aides and in writing laws have managed to get a voice in the legislature and Governors Mansion, working directly for Republican legislators. This is a little different than in the South where Republican Legislators sneak out to a Council of Conservative Citizens Barbeque or confab every year to press the flesh with part of the base – but otherwise try and keep the white sheets away from the state house.

Here is an article about one of the leading right-wing hate-talk radio personalities in Arizona – John Justice –  NY Times reports on Jon Justice and hate radio in Tucson

Come on out and shoot a machine gun to “target” Gabrielle Giffords? Flashback: Giffords Opponent Had M16 Shooting Event, ‘Help Remove Gabrielle Giffords From Office’

And lastly this –

Hate Speech, the Right’s Magic Bullet

…The fact is, it has been the right’s goal to poison our political discourse for years. Remember the notorious “GOPAC Memo” back in the 1990s, created for the Republicans’ leadership training institute and endorsed by Newt Gingrich? Titled “Language: A Key Mechanism of Control,” in it, candidates are instructed in what words to use when defining their opponents (i.e., liberals). “These are powerful words that can create a clear and easily understood contract,” the memo said. “Apply these to the opponent, their record, proposals, and their party” (in other words, demonize them).

Among them: intolerant … lie … pathetic … radical … sick … steal … traitors. Gingrich and his allies deliberately set out to employ toxic language against their opponents, and are still doing it. They will say anything to get a vote, especially now that the angriest and most irrational so often make up a majority of those who bother to go to the polls. This kind of talk is part and parcel of their strategy, and no matter what motivated the Tucson killings, it needs to stop.

Their lock-and-load rhetoric is reinforced by the rambling ranks of those who go on the Internet to spout any conspiracy theory, distortion of history or outright lie that helps them make it through the night. Add, too, the men and women of radio and television, the Limbaugh’s, Beck’s, and their ilk who use the airwaves as a cudgel, battering viewers and listeners with the certainty of their illogic, their thinly veiled messages of bigotry and meretricious embrace of Constitution, religion, flag and family.

All of them will huff and puff that this is an isolated incident by a madman that cannot be blamed on their bombast and bluster. But let’s call it out for what it is; let’s debate what in our gut we know to be true: even if it was not their intent, it’s likely the words of the right on radio and TV and in the books they publish spurred on the man who killed two and wounded six in a Knoxville, Kentucky, church in July 2008, and the murderer of George Tiller, one of the few doctors in America who still performed late-term abortions for women with problem pregnancies whose health was at stake from life-threatening complications, or whose infants would be born dead or dying. Their invective, whether inadvertently or not, has encouraged the vandalism and threats faced by so many of our candidates and elected officials, including the now desperately wounded Congresswoman Giffords. Her shooting, and the death and wounding of so many who came to meet with her, are just the latest example of ideologically-motivated bloodshed.

On the Right Wing’s Latest Defense of Assasination

I don’t see Obama supporters coming to political meetings “strapped“.

I don’t see Liberals going to a Presidential Town Hall carrying guns.

Nor do I see ANY Democrat politician talking about “Second Amendment Remedies” in the event of losing an election.

Nor do I see armed Democrats “protesting” at the front door of any Tea Party or Republican Politician’s office.

I don’t see any Democrat talking about “secession” as Governor Rick Perry, Representative Zach Wamp (TN),  and others have openly spouted (and we all know what happened the last time they tried that one!).

We don’t have Liberals blowing away cops on the street because of something they heard on Rachel Maddow like they did on Glenn Beck. or here withAlex Jones and Glenn Beck.

You don’t have Liberals flying airplanes into Federal Offices to protest the Government.

You don’t have Liberals blowing up Federal Offices, including Day Care Centers and killing 162 people.

You don’t have Liberals mailing Anthrax to only conservative news people and Republican Congressmen and Senators.

You don’t have Liberals setting out to kill 108 people and to assasinate the President, or

Blowing away museum guards, or…

Plotting to mass murder police.

You don’t have a single case of a Liberal shooting a right wing Congressman or Senator – or even trying (thank God).

Now us Liberals telling the truth in calling conservatives “stupid”, and “hypocrits” may hurt conservatives minuscule, fragile manhood like hell, but it hardly rises to the level of threat to life and limb boradcast daily on one or more conservative media outlets – nor the sort of threats endured by many liberal bloggers on a day to day basis.

You conservatives enjoy having that 9 Year Old girl’s blood on your hands? Because if you don’t…

WTF are you defending this isht?

Buckdancing and obfuscation about the real issue – which was caused by the way by your “hero”…

“saint” Raygun.

Raygun?

Who shut down the public mental health facilities and dumped thousand of mentally ill on the streets?

Who, by doing so made it damn near impossible to commit folks like the Arizona assassin and the guy who took so many lives at Virginia Tech?

And lastly…

Who makes it impossible to prevent these sort of whack-jobs from buying guns?

It ain’t Liberals.
