Math Professor Stopped For Terrorism on Flight For Writing Down Formulas

Another one of those ignorant Trump nut-job types overreacting…

Dark, Curly Haired Man With Olive Skin Suspected of Terrorism After Intensely Scribbling Strange Script Aboard Plane. But There’s Just One Problem.

Something about her airplane seatmate didn’t sit right with her.

He had dark, curly hair, olive skin and a foreign accent. When she tried some small talk on the Thursday evening jaunt from Philadelphia to Syracuse, New York, he replied bluntly as though he couldn’t be bothered at the moment.

She took the hint. But what was up with his scribbling on the notepad? She noticed how intensely he seemed to approach whatever it was he was working on, but she couldn’t make out what his script could possibly represent. And it all added up, for her, to an unsettling feeling.

So after the plane had finished boarding, she handed a flight attendant a note, the Washington Post reported.

A half hour went by with American Airlines flight 3950 remaining on the tarmac, and the flight attendant returned to the woman and asked if she now felt okay to fly or was “too sick,” the Post said.

She said she was okay, but soon the plane was headed back to the gate where the woman was escorted off, the paper said.

Finally the captain approached that intense, dark curly haired man who had been sitting next to the woman who just deplaned — and now he was being escorted off the flight as well.

An airline agent told the man he was suspected of terrorism, the Post said — mostly because of whatever it was his former seatmate had seen him intensely scribbling (but his look and accent apparently gave her pause, too).

The man under investigation laughed, the paper said.

He wasn’t scribbling in Arabic or penning code for a terrorist plot — he was in the middle of a math equation.

Guido Menzio hails from Italy and is a well-regarded economist who’s an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania.

In fact, he won the prestigious Carlo Alberto Medal in 2015, set aside for the best Italian economist under 40.

As for his scribbling, Menzio was headed to Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, where he would be lecturing about menu costs and price dispersion, the Post said, and was attempting to nail down some figures on the plane.

The Ivy League prof let those concerned see his work for themselves, and he was allowed to return to his seat, he told the Post by email, adding that the pilot seemed embarrassed. Two hours after it was set to take off, the 41-minute flight finally got off the ground.

Menzio’s former seatmate never returned to the plane, and an American Airlines spokesman told the Post she initially told the flight attendant she was feeling ill — but after deplaning explained to authorities her concerns about Menzio were behind her condition.

Menzio told the paper he was “treated respectfully throughout” but is unimpressed by a “broken system that does not collect information efficiently.” He added to the Post that airline security protocol “is too rigid — in the sense that once the whistle is blown everything stops without checks – and relies on the input of people who may be completely clueless. ”

He even got a little political with the Post, noting the presidential campaign has increased xenophobia: “What might prevent an epidemic of paranoia?” Menzio wrote to the paper. “It is hard not to recognize in this incident, the ethos of [Donald] Trump’s voting base.”

Disabled NAACP Leader Kicked Off American Airlines Flight After Being Attacked by Republican

Rev. William Barber II, the leader of the “Moral Monday” protests in North Carolina has been attacked viciously vocally by racist conservatives. Now, how exactly American Airlines even imagined it was justified in removing the Pastor after being verbally assaulted by a man sitting behind him on a recent flight. I certainly hope he sues, and some racist flight attendants lose their jobs. Yet another case of the Carolina bigots feeling empowered by Trump’s racism

NAACP leader kicked off flight after confronting racist passenger — and conservatives pounce

The leader of North Carolina’s NAACP was removed from a flight over the weekend after he confronted another passenger who was insulting him — and the state’s Republican Party attacked him as a hypocrite.

The Rev. William Barber II, the founder of “Moral Monday” civil disobedience protests of GOP legislation, was removed from American Eagle Flight 5382 late Friday after flight attendants called him a “disruptive passenger,” reported the Charlotte Observer.

Barber purchased two seats on the flight so he could sit comfortably because he is disabled after undergoing bone-fusion surgery to treat his arthritis.

The civil rights leader said another man sitting behind him began loudly complaining about “those people” needing two seats and making other disparaging remarks about him and his disability.

The verbal abuse continued, even after Barber complained to a flight attendant, who asked the other man to “bring it down a little bit.”

“As I heard these things, I became more and more uncomfortable, especially since he was behind me,” Barber said in a statement. “The attitude with which he spoke, and my experiences with others who have directed similar harsh, sometimes threatening words, emails, and calls at me, came to my mind.”

Barber said he was unable to turn around to face the man because of his disability, so he stood up “to speak to him as one human being to another.”

“I asked him why he was saying such things, and I said he did not know me, my condition, and I added I would pray for him,” Barber said.

An airline official asked Barber to leave the plane at that point, before the crew had given safety instructions, and he was escorted off by police officers and airline employees — who he said treated him graciously.

Barber questions why he was removed for confronting a man who was attacking him, and he said he would speak with his attorneys about the incident.

Republicans, however, mocked the civil rights leader in a sarcastic statement questioning his character.

“I guess Rev. Barber thinks it’s ‘moral’ to inconvenience other passengers wanting to get home to see their families, because he once again thinks his ‘right’ to say and do whatever he wants is more important than other law abiding citizens who conduct themselves under society’s rules of civil behavior,” said Michele Nix, vice chair of the state GOP.

RyanAir… Duct Tape Without a Prayer

Considering the extremes in temperature outside of an aircraft, and 600 mph winds whipping past the cockpit – seems a little strange that anyone would duct tape a window in place on an aircraft. Duct tape is amazing stuff…

But not that amazing.

Ryanair Flight Aborted After Tape On Window Comes Loose

The latest of European budget airline Ryanair’s fails falls under the “oh dear God” category.

A Ryanair flight from London’s Stansted airport to Riga, Latvia was aborted 20 minutes after takeoff after a tape on a window came loose and started making “alarming noises.”

The tape was fastened around the edges of a windscreen in the cockpit, which had been put on by ground crew before take off, the Telegraph reports, which was being used as a precaution to secure a new window seal.

Anthony Neal, a passenger from Kent, told The Sun: “We were kept in the dark, and were terrified. I could see guys taping in the windscreen with what looked like duct tape or gaffer tape. We were in the sky, then the pilot said due to damage on the windscreen, we were going to have to turn back.”

The flight, which was carrying 200 people, was forced to turn around. Ryanair insists passengers and crew were in no danger during the incident. A spokesman told the Telegraph: “We do not comment on routine technical issues. All Ryanair flights operate in accordance with approved safety standards.”

The Irish Aviation Authority told the Daily Mail that they were satisfied with the ground crew’s decision to add tape to the window, adding that it should last up to seven days. A spokesman said: “All the maintenance was carried out in line with the correct procedures. The pilot took the correct action by returning to base.”

Arline Security Incident in Flight to NYC

This one is strange. I am a frequent flyer, and I can’t imagine anyone wanting to spend a moment longer than necessary in one of those tiny on-board bathrooms on a commercial airliner. They aren’t designed to be comfortable intentionally – to encourage passengers to spend as little time as possible – instead of taking a magazine to read half the flight preventing other passengers from having access.

So if 3 passengers lock themselves in, and refuse to come out – there’s a problem. a BIG problem. And with airplane food being confined to a bag of chips and a stale cookie anymore…

It wasn’t something they ate.

Definitely no room for a Jacuzzi...

Military jets safely escort flight to NYC

Two fighter jets escorted a New York-bound American Airlines flight from Los Angeles after three passengers locked themselves in the bathroom Sunday, the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, officials said.

A law enforcement official said it wasn’t thought to be terrorism, and American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith said, “In our eyes, it’s a big nothing.”

The North American Aerospace Defense Command scrambled two F-16 jets to shadow Flight 34 until it landed safely at New York’s Kennedy Airport at 4:10 p.m. Sunday, the Transportation Security Administration said in a statement.

The nature of the incident was unclear, but the passengers locked themselves in the bathroom and were still inside when the plane landed, the law enforcement official said. The official was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Law enforcement met the flight and will interview passengers, the TSA statement said. The FBI responded to the airport.

The jets intercepted the flight about 100 miles west of New York and shadowed it until it landed, said John Cornelio, spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command. He described the measure as precautionary.

Smith said a “security concern” was brought to the airline’s attention but the plane’s captain never declared any sort of security threat and never requested law enforcement help.

He said the crew used “normal procedures” to assess the circumstances and the plane landed as planned.

New York has been in a heightened state of security after federal officials received a credible but uncorroborated tip of a car bomb plot on the anniversary in either New York or Washington.

Plane Passenger ‘Took a Swing’ at Romney

An airline passenger “took a swing” at former Republican presidential candidate and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney aboard an AirCanada flight from Vancouver to Los Angeles on Monday, after Romney asked the passenger to return his seat back to the upright position while awaiting take off.

Romney, 62, and his wife, Ann, who were returning from the Olympics, were reportedly sitting in the economy section before takeoff when Romney’s routine request enraged the passenger sitting in front of his wife.

“The passenger became physically violent. Gov. Romney did not retaliate, but instead let the airline crew respond to the incident,” Romney’s spokesman, Eric Fehrnstrom, said in a statement to AOL News.

Save America – Plant a Republican…

Indeed.
