Senior Senate Democrat Calls for Congressional Probe of Russian Meddling in US Election

Still, the Ds aren’t mounting a fierce push, and the Rs seem uninterested.

The future top Democrat in the Senate has called for a congressional investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, who will succeed the retiring Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) as the Senate minority leader in the Congress that convenes in January, has signed on to the demand for a congressional inquiry into the Russian hacking of political targets—including the Democratic National Committee and John Podesta, the chairman of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign—during the 2016 campaign. “Foreign interference in our elections is a serious issue, and deserves a vigorous investigation,” Schumer tells Mother Jones.

Two weeks ago, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the senior Democrat on the House oversight committee, sent a letter to Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), the committee’s chairman, asking that Chaffetz launch an investigation of Russian intervention in the election. This request came two days after the chief of the National Security Agency, Admiral Michael Rogers, said a “nation-state”—meaning Russia—had messed in the 2016 elections “to achieve a specific effect.” Rogers was referring to the hacking of Democratic targets and the release of the pilfered information via WikiLeaks. Cummings noted in his letter that Chaffetz had told him that he was “open to considering such an investigation.” But Chaffetz has yet to respond to Cummings, according to a Cummings spokesperson. And a spokeswoman for Chaffetz did not respond to a request for comment.

Talking to reporters earlier this month, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the top House Democrat, said Democrats would demand such a probe: “Something is not right with this picture and I think the American people deserve an investigation into how a foreign government had an impact on our election.” And Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who was harshly critical of Trump during the campaign, proposed that Congress hold hearings on “Russia’s misadventures throughout the world,” including the DNC hack. “Were they involved in cyberattacks that had a political component to it in our elections?” Graham recently asked.

In August, Harry Reid demanded the FBI investigate “Russian government tampering in our presidential election” and connections between Donald Trump’s campaign and Moscow. (In October, he claimed the FBI possessed “explosive information about close ties and coordination between Trump, his top advisers, and the Russian government.) A congressional inquiry would differ from an FBI criminal or counterintelligence investigation in that it could result in public hearings and a public report. An FBI investigation would not necessarily yield any public information, unless it led to an indictment. Any CIA and NSA investigation of Russian hacking would likely remain secret.

Though Democrats have urged a congressional investigation of Moscow’s involvement in the 2016 election, this call has hardly been full-throated. Pelosi has not repeatedly demanded a probe, and Schumer has not yet signaled this as a top priority. The Obama administration issued a statement in October declaring that the “U.S. Intelligence Community (USIC) is confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from US persons and institutions, including from US political organizations.” But President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have not said much about the Russian operation or directly voiced support for a public investigation. In October, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said, “There are a range of responses that are available to the president, and he will consider a response that is proportional.” He added that the president’s decision might never be acknowledged or disclosed.

So with the exception of Cummings’ effort, there has been no fierce push for an investigation that would dig into the covert Russian campaign to affect US politics and that would inform the public about what happened, what investigations were conducted by law enforcement and intelligence agencies, and what has been done to prevent further meddling in order to ensure the security of US elections.

Yet more than 150 academic experts on cybersecurity, national defense, authoritarian regimes, and free and fair elections have signed a letter requesting a congressional investigation. The letter noted:

We represent a wide range of viewpoints on most issues, but on one point we agree: our polarized political climate must not prevent our elected representatives from doing what is right. In this case, what is right is simple: our country needs a thorough, public Congressional investigation into the role that foreign powers played in the months leading up to November. As representatives of the American people, Congress is best positioned to conduct an objective investigation…With concerns rising on both sides of the political aisle about myriad practices that challenge free and fair elections, a public investigation promises to provide the transparency needed to calm Americans’ fears and restore faith in our political process. As voting American citizens, we know that nothing could be more important for our country.

In his letter to Chaffetz, Cummings wrote, “Elections are the bedrock of our nation’s democracy. Any attempt by a foreign power to undermine them is a direct attack on our core democratic values, and it should chill every Member of Congress and American—red or blue—to the core.” But few legislators are acting as if they are indeed chilled to the core. And Democrats, who were the victims of the hacking attributed to Vladimir Putin’s regime, are generally not in an uproar about the matter. With Republican leaders showing little interest in scrutinizing Russian interference in an election that handed the GOP the White House and both houses of Congress, Democrats might have to be more vociferous in their demand for an investigation to have any chance of delivering to the public an explanation of what happened to US democracy in 2016.

KFC Has a New Col Sanders…And He is Black

K-Fried continues the hilarious and brilliant ad campaign using stand ins for the long deceased Col. Harlan Sanders, this time with a black actor playing the Col..

David Alan Grier will be the new Col. Sanders

Kentucky Fried Chicken has a new Col. Sanders — and he’s black

The #OscarsSoWhite pendulum has swung the other way — now Col. Sanders is black.

“Breaking news: David Alan Grier has been cast as the first African American Colonel Sanders in the new KFC ad campaign,” Grier tweeted Thursday morning, revealing that he had been cast to portray the iconic Kentucky Fried Chicken pitchman in the white suit and string tie.

The Original Col Sanders

No other details were provided.

Grier is the latest — and, by far, the most eye-catching — actor to play Col. Harland Sanders in KFC’s ongoing effort to rebrand itself.

In May, the company launched an ad campaign that revived the late Sanders in the form of “Saturday Night Live” comic Darrell Hammond.

Hammond’s gig was short lived, and he was replaced by fellow “SNL” alum Norm MacDonald, who also ended up being replaced when comic Jim Gaffigan took over.

But Grier, 60, is the first to cross what might be the ultimate racial divide — and fans were instantly offering suggestions.

“Please do the KFC commercial dressed as Col Sanders but with Maya Angelou voice?” tweeted Keith Arsenault.

Another KFC fan reminded Grier that he was stepping into a controversial role, especially given that racist Alabama Gov. George Wallace reportedly once considered Sanders to be his running mate on a segregationist third-party presidential bid in 1968.

“Damn David,” tweeted J. Cobb, “you’re gonna break Mr. George Wallace’s heart.”

Last year, “Saturday Night Live” veteran Norm McDonald donned the white suit.

KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN Last year, “Saturday Night Live” veteran Norm McDonald donned the white suit.

Making matters worse for Grier is the legacy of Sanders himself. The original pitchman for the “finger-lickin’-good” chicken led a storied life, enlisting in the Army at 16, and being home just three months because he was too young to serve.

Sanders’ pal, former Kentucky Gov. Lawrence Wetherby, later gave him the honorary rank of colonel — and the title stuck. Sanders was a constant TV presence — and remained so even after he sold his company in 1964. He died in 1980 at 90.

Trump ‘Definitely Not’ Participating In Last GOP Debate Before Iowa

The GOP presidential candidates will face off Thursday in their final debate before next week’s Iowa caucuses — this time, without Donald Trump.

Fox News, which is hosting the event, announced on Tuesday which candidates made the cut for the primetime debate, which will begin at 9 p.m. EST.

Trump’s campaign manager Corey Lewandowski confirmed to the Washington Post on Tuesday that the GOP front-runner is “definitely not participating in the Fox News debate.”

In a statement, the campaign announced that Trump will hold his own separate event in Iowa to raise money for wounded veterans.

“Like running for office as an extremely successful person, this takes guts and it is the kind of mentality our country needs in order to Make America Great Again,” the campaign said.

Fox News issued a statement on Tuesday night that blasted the Trump campaign for making ridiculous ultimatums and threatening the reputation of anchor and debate moderator Megyn Kelly.

MSNBC Wusses Out…Again. Martin Bashir Resignation.

MSNBC commentator Martin Bashir has tendered his resignation to MSNBC. More than likely he was asked to leave by cowardly MSNBC Management. This leaves a huge hole in MSNBC’s lineup, taking away what was by far, their best interviewer. I mean I love you Rachael, but although she is smarter than the entire collection of Faux News bimbos combined, cutting through the bullshit in an interview isn’t her strong point. Bashir is a victim of responding to the Sno’ Ho’s ignorant and racist comments in kind – saying what a lot of us would if we had the microphone.

To be honest, if MSNBC is too chickenshit to call Palin on her pernicious and offensive racist statements…

Then they are too chickenshit for this viewer.

Putting this one under the heading of Domestic Terrorism.

Martin Bashir Resigns From MSNBC Following Sarah Palin Comments

Martin Bashir has resigned from MSNBC following weeks of controversy over his incendiary comments about Sarah Palin, he announced in an email posted byMediaite on Wednesday.

“Upon further reflection, and after meeting with the president of MSNBC, I have tendered my resignation,” the email read in part. “It is my sincere hope that all of my colleagues, at this special network, will be allowed to focus on the issues that matter without the distraction of myself or my ill-judged comments.”

In a statement, MSNBC president Phil Griffin paid tribute to Bashir:

“Martin Bashir resigned today, effective immediately. I understand his decision and I thank him for three great years with MSNBC. Martin is a good man and respected colleague – we wish him only the best.”

Bashir had been a host on the network since 2011, and had frequently raised eyebrows with his hyperbolic commentary. But his comments in November in response to remarks about slavery by Palin touched off a firestorm. Among other things, Bashir said that someone should defecate and urinate in Palin’s mouth, a punishment delivered to some slaves. He apologized, but the comments continued tohaunt him.

Bashir’s resignation came shortly after Alec Baldwin parted ways with MSNBC over anti-gay comments he made towards a photographer. At the time, many wondered why Baldwin, who was suspended for two weeks for statements he made off the air, was seemingly being punished more than Bashir, who was not given any immediate suspension.

Bashir’s departure leaves a hole in MSNBC’s afternoon lineup. Leading candidates for the slot include MSNBC contributor and guest host Joy Reid, along with the recently hired Ronan Farrow. For the time being, Reid will fill in as a guest host.

Chicken-Diddle. Mary J. Blige Burger King Ad

Things that make you go Hmmmmm…

Now … Why exactly is this one “racist” and the black Popeyes commercials aren’t?

Mary J. Blige

Mary J. Blige’s Burger King commercial pulled

Mary J. Blige’s Burger King commercial, which featured the Grammy-winning R&B star singing about chicken, has been pulled off the air.

The fast-food chain is blaming music licensing issues, not criticism of the ad, for the decision to pull it.

The ad, which features Blige singing soulfully about chicken wraps, premiered this week.

But as the video went viral, some in the black community criticized the ad as stereotypical. The black women-oriented website Madame Noire likened it to “buffoonery.”

Burger King said Tuesday the commercial was pulled because of a licensing concern. The company said it hopes to have the Blige “ads back on the air soon,” though a spokeswoman would not comment on whether they ads would be the same.

The spokeswoman also noted that other celebrities, including Salma Hayek and Jay Leno, also are advertising the snack wraps.

A rep for Blige did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Edcucation Reform??? How About an IQ Test to Hold Office!

Two weeks ago we had a Democrat Congressman who worried that the addition of US Naval Forces on leave on the Island of Guam…

Would cause the Island to tip over.

This wee, we’ve got a Republican who thinks your HMO is going to take a chicken for payment! Sue Lowden who is running for a US Senate Seat in Nevada versus Harry Reid proposed “bartering” for Medical Care instead of Health Reform.

Damn-I wonder if Blue Cross will take a dish of my famous Deviled Eggs the next time I go in for a Blood test?

I’m telling you that this works. You know, before we all started having health care, in the olden days our grandparents, they would bring a chicken to the doctor, they would say I’ll paint your house. I mean, that’s the old days of what people would do to get health care with your doctors. Doctors are very sympathetic people. I’m not backing down from that system.
