Tom Steyer launches $10 million campaign to impeach Trump

Democratic mega-donor and billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer is spending what an aide says is “well over $10 million” on a national TV adcampaign Friday calling for President Donald Trump’s impeachment.

The campaign is a bid by Steyer — who has not ruled out a run for office himself — to “demand that elected officials take a stand” on an issue Democratic leaders have so far largely avoided.
Democratic megadonor Steyer mulls run for office amid 'complete crisis'
“A Republican Congress once impeached a president for far less. And today, people in Congress and his own administration know that this President is a clear and present danger who is mentally unstable and armed with nuclear weapons,” Steyer says in the ad, which largely features him speaking directly to the camera.
The ads are running on broadcast stations in New York and California and nationally on cable television. Accompanying the TV ads is what a Steyer aide said is a seven-figure digital ad buy intended to get the minute-long spot a large audience online.
Steyer is paying for the ads himself, and they are not part of his NextGen America political apparatus.
Instead, the ads point to a new website — NeedToImpeach.com — which features an open letter where Steyer takes clear aim at California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, citing — without using her name — Feinstein’s comment that Trump “can be a good President.” Feinstein has since downplayed the comment.
In the letter, Steyer hits Trump for ending protections for undocumented immigrants brought into the United States as children, for “actively sabotaging” Obamacare, and for “repealing clean air protections and unleashing polluters.”
“He has threatened to reduce aid for millions of American citizens in Puerto Rico who are struggling to survive without drinkable water or electricity — a move that would be a total dereliction of his duty. And every day, Americans are left bracing for a Twitter screed that could set off a nuclear war. These actions represent systemic attacks on our nation’s future,” Steyer writes.
Steyer is openly mulling a run in California’s primary against Feinstein next year. State Senate Democratic leader Kevin de León has already entered that race, challenging Feinstein from the left. Steyer has also considered running for California governor in 2018 or president in 2020.
Most Democrats have not yet publicly broached the subject of impeachment — though Reps. Al Green of Texas and Brad Sherman of California have each introduced articles of impeachment in the House, and Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee plans to do so.
Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon warned Trump about the 25th Amendment, which allows a majority of the Cabinet to vote to remove a sitting president, Vanity Fair recently reported.

Trump Bankrolled Racist Ads to Stop Mohawk Casino

Trump has no compunction in playing the race card – in business or politics…

REVEALED: Trump bankrolled a racist ad campaign against Native Americans to protect his casino biz

Donald Trump has shown no reluctance to do bigoted things during his presidential campaign, whether it’s supporting a ban on Muslims entering the U.S. or attacking a “Mexican” judge as being unfit to rule on the Trump University case.

Because of this, it’s not surprising to learn that Trump once bankrolled a racist ad campaign against Native Americans who had just proposed building a casino in upstate New York.

The Los Angeles Times reports that when the St. Regis Mohawk tribe announced plans to build a casino near a racetrack in the Catskills, Trump decided to bankroll an ad campaign aimed at convincing local communities to kill the project.

Trump plunged $1 million into a purported “grassroots” anti-gambling organization called the New York Institute for Law and Society that warned the casino would bring “increased crime, broken families, bankruptcies and, in the case of the Mohawks, violence.”

But that’s not all: Documents obtained by The Los Angeles Times show that Trump personally signed off on a strategy devised by longtime ally Roger Stone to depict the Mohawks as a violent people who would bring ruin to everyone else in the area.

“Roger, do it!” Trump scrawled on a proposed flier that said the Mohawk tribe was well known for being a violent group that sold drugs and smuggled undocumented immigrants into the country.

Trump and his associates were ordered by the New York Temporary State Commission on Lobbying to pay $250,000 for deceptive advertising by not disclosing the fact that Trump almost single handedly funded the New York Institute for Law and Society, despite the fact that the organization falsely boasted it had raised funds from more than 12,000 donors.

KFC Has a New Col Sanders…And He is Black

K-Fried continues the hilarious and brilliant ad campaign using stand ins for the long deceased Col. Harlan Sanders, this time with a black actor playing the Col..

David Alan Grier will be the new Col. Sanders

Kentucky Fried Chicken has a new Col. Sanders — and he’s black

The #OscarsSoWhite pendulum has swung the other way — now Col. Sanders is black.

“Breaking news: David Alan Grier has been cast as the first African American Colonel Sanders in the new KFC ad campaign,” Grier tweeted Thursday morning, revealing that he had been cast to portray the iconic Kentucky Fried Chicken pitchman in the white suit and string tie.

The Original Col Sanders

No other details were provided.

Grier is the latest — and, by far, the most eye-catching — actor to play Col. Harland Sanders in KFC’s ongoing effort to rebrand itself.

In May, the company launched an ad campaign that revived the late Sanders in the form of “Saturday Night Live” comic Darrell Hammond.

Hammond’s gig was short lived, and he was replaced by fellow “SNL” alum Norm MacDonald, who also ended up being replaced when comic Jim Gaffigan took over.

But Grier, 60, is the first to cross what might be the ultimate racial divide — and fans were instantly offering suggestions.

“Please do the KFC commercial dressed as Col Sanders but with Maya Angelou voice?” tweeted Keith Arsenault.

Another KFC fan reminded Grier that he was stepping into a controversial role, especially given that racist Alabama Gov. George Wallace reportedly once considered Sanders to be his running mate on a segregationist third-party presidential bid in 1968.

“Damn David,” tweeted J. Cobb, “you’re gonna break Mr. George Wallace’s heart.”

Last year, “Saturday Night Live” veteran Norm McDonald donned the white suit.

Making matters worse for Grier is the legacy of Sanders himself. The original pitchman for the “finger-lickin’-good” chicken led a storied life, enlisting in the Army at 16, and being home just three months because he was too young to serve.

Sanders’ pal, former Kentucky Gov. Lawrence Wetherby, later gave him the honorary rank of colonel — and the title stuck. Sanders was a constant TV presence — and remained so even after he sold his company in 1964. He died in 1980 at 90.

Vatican Threatens to Sue Benetton Over “Kissing” Ad

Benetton’s stock in trade has been “shock” ads for a while. This time, I think they went way overboard!

Some of the offensive pics can be seen here. No word yet from the Muslim Iman (Sheik Ahmed el-Tayeb) in the pic. I can’t imagine Sunni followers are thrilled, either.

While more tolerant of the slings and arrows than some Religions - The Catholic Church is taking this one seriously.

Vatican Pledges Legal Action Against Benetton

The Vatican is taking legal action against the Benetton clothing company to prevent the circulation of an ad featuring a fake photo montage of Pope Benedict XVI kissing a top Egyptian imam on the lips.

The Vatican said Thursday the image is “offensive not only to the dignity of the pope and the Catholic Church, but also to the sensibilities of believers.”

Benetton withdrew the ad immediately after its debut Wednesday once the Vatican denounced it as an unacceptable provocation.

Benetton had said its “Unhate” campaign was aimed at fostering tolerance, but the Vatican’s daily newspaper Thursday called it “an insult to believers in the name of profit.”

The campaign’s fake photos feature a half-dozen purported political nemeses in lip-locked embraces, including President Barack Obama and Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Il and South Korean President Lee Myung-bak.

The photo of the pope kissing Sheik Ahmed el-Tayeb of Cairo’s al-Azhar institute, the pre-eminent theological school of Sunni Islam, was on Benetton’s website all day Wednesday but was pulled about an hour after the Vatican’s protest.

Al-Azhar suspended interfaith talks with the Vatican earlier this year after Benedict called for greater protections for Egypt’s minority Christians.

Shock ads have long been a part of Benetton’s publicity strategy, with photographer Oliviero Toscani’s famous campaigns for them featuring death row inmates and people dying of AIDS.

In a statement, the Treviso, Italy-based clothing manufacturer said it was sorry that its image had offended the faithful and that as a result “we have decided with immediate effect to withdraw this image from every publication.”

The other images, including the one of Obama, are still on its website.

Utah Cancels State Fair Ads Featuring Black Actor

No accounting for lousy taste – but Utah cancelled this years ad run for their State Fair which featured a black actor. The ads have historically been largely tongue in cheek, and in past years have featured take offs on the Napoleon Dynamite movie, as well as a series which ran several years ago around a young girl.

This was one of the ads which was cancelled – which I think is a riot:

This ad series was replaced by this, from 2 years ago:

While I agree, having a black person (or any person of color) in a ad in Utah doesn’t exactly fit the states “demographic”, which is overwhelmingly white…

White folks in Utah don’t boogie to Soul Music? I mean, it was pretty much a social faux pas to have a wedding reception  in this country for the past 20 years without having the DJ either a) the Electric Slide, b) something from Kool and the Gang, or c) KC and the Sunshine Band, which while not all black, certainly were influenced by R&B…

Even if the wedding theme was “Country”!

Bullpuckkies!

Utah State Fair Dumps Ads Featuring Black Man

The Utah State Fair changed its ad campaign at the last minute … because the soul-inspired spots featuring a black man singing about funnel cakes and pigs didn’t meet “the demographics” or “flavor” of the fair, says the chairman. In their place, the Fair Board (which, the chairman says, did not preview the original ads before they started running) decided to re-run the spots from two years ago, starring a little girl and a cow. (Watch all three in the gallery.)

“People only see the ads for a week and a half or so, and then there’s nothing else for a year,” the chairman tellsKSL.com. “If it’s a good ad, why not use it? Our Napoleon Dynamite ad was a classic.”
