‘Suicide bomber’ squirrel hospitalizes Chicago politician who spoke out against squirrels

Image result for Howard Brookins Jr. ChicagoHoward Brookins Jr., the alderman for Chicago’s 21st ward, had publicly spoken out about a toothy menace plaguing the city’s garbage carts: urban squirrels, which in Brookins’s view were “aggressive,” and aggressively damaging the trash cart lids.

He now has another reason to dislike the rodents. One recently sent him to the hospital with a skull fracture in a “freak bicycle accident,” as the alderman wrote on Facebook.

Brookins was biking along Cal-Sag Trail on Nov. 13, when a squirrel darted into his path. The squirrel cut Brookins’s bike trip short by wrapping itself in the spokes of the alderman’s bicycle. The alderman flipped over the handlebars and landed with such a severe impact that he fractured his skull, broke his nose and knocked out a handful of teeth, the Chicago Tribune reported. A woman who passed by called 911. Brookins was only able to leave the hospital Thursday.

“I can think of no other reason for this squirrel’s actions than that it was like a suicide bomber, getting revenge,” the alderman said to the Tribune on Monday. He told the newspaper a full recovery was expected to take months.

Brookins had denounced the eastern gray squirrel just a few weeks before the accident. In mid-October, Brookins complained that “aggressive squirrels” were undermining the effort to overhaul the city’s trash carts, reported the Chicago Sun Times. The squirrels were gnawing through the garbage cart lids at a cost of $300,000 to the city.

“It’s a pet peeve. It does invoke some giggles. But we are spending too much money on replacing garbage carts because the squirrels continue to eat through ’em,” Brookins said at a city council meeting on Oct. 21, according to the Sun Times. The alderman said that residents were repeatedly asking for replacement garbage cans, as the squirrels could chew through the lid within as little as two days.

After the accident, Brookins wrote on Facebook that he was okay, but he added he will undergo several surgeries “to recover from damage to my face and upper body.” His chief of staff, James Ramos, told Chicagoist that Brookins was “in very good spirits” despite his “heavy damage.”

The squirrel, however, was destined for the great Chicago garbage cart in the sky.

Guns Don’t Kill People, But Stupid Owners of Guns Do

Multiple Cases in the last two days of stupid gun owners contributing to murder and mayhem…

8-year-old Georgia girl fatally shot when mom drops gun while braiding child’s hair

A Georgia girl was killed in an apparently accidental shooting that also wounded her mother.

Marsha Lynch said she was braiding her daughter’s hair when a handgun fell to the floor and fired, striking her in the leg and then shooting her 8-year-old daughter in the head.

Sharia Lynch died from the gunshot wound before she could be airlifted to an area hospital.

Boy, 6, fatally shoots toddler brother while playing ‘cops and robbers,’ dad arrested

Michael Santiago needed a gun.

He was a former gang member who had snitched on his old crew and now feared for his life. So Santiago purchased a pistol on the street and kept it in the kitchen just in case.

Whether he needed to show his 6-year-old son the weapon, however, is something that will likely haunt Santiago for the rest of his life.

On Saturday night, Santiago’s security scheme went horribly wrong when his son found the loaded gun. The boy, who has not been named by police, then began playing “cops and robbers” with his younger brother, 3-year-old Eian, when the gun suddenly went off.

The bullet struck Eian in the face, killing him.

2 Shot During ‘Old West’ Gunfight Reenactment In Tombstone, Arizona

Two people were shot in Tombstone, Arizona, during a gunfight reenactment when one of the actors allegedly used real bullets.

One of the actors, Tom Carter, was late to the performance and his weapon wasn’t checked, according to News 4 Tucson. During the shootout, he allegedly hit actor Ken Curtis with a real bullet.

Both were members of the Tombstone Vigilantes performance group.

“The Vigilantes immediately stopped the show and Tom was relieved of his weapon,” Bob Randall, the city’s marshall, said in a statement cited by the Tucson Sentinel. “During inspection of his weapon, it was discovered that there was one live round in the cylinder withfive expended casings indicating the gun had held six live rounds prior to the skit.”

Accidental shooting inside Green Top terrified kids, dad says

An investigation is underway into how man accidentally shot himself in the hand inside Green Top, a hunting and fishing store in Ashland. The man arrived at Green Top Saturday afternoon with several hand guns and long guns looking for help getting them cleared, investigators said.

“As the owner of the weapon and another [person] were handling the weapon to remove the rounds, the weapon accidentally discharged and the weapon owner was struck in his hand and received non-life threatening injuries,” Hanover Sheriff’s Office spokesman Major Mike Trice.

A father who was inside the store with his children at the time of the shooting said the incident terrified his kids.

Salina police investigate accidental shooting in theater

A Salina man is taken to the hospital after shooting himself in the leg.

It happened inside a movie theatre at Central Mall during a showing Friday night.

Police say the shooting was accidental.

Witnesses it happened 45 minutes into the movie.

“At first what popped into my mind was that someone popped a bag of candy or something and goofing off or something,” said Heather Myers, who was inside the theatre when the shooting happened.

Then seconds later, a man sitting three rows behind Heather and her husband Domenic, yells out for help.

“This guy started shouting ‘Oh my God, I just shot myself! I just got my concealed and carry,’ and then everybody jumped up and that’s when we heard call 9-11.

Gotta Find Me an Angel… Mystery Priest Saves Girl

Amazing story…

Mystery ‘Angel’ Priest Appears At Missouri Car Crash, Performs ‘Miracle,’ Then Disappears

Rescue workers and community members from a small Missouri town have a mystery on their hands. An “angel” priest reportedly appeared out of nowhere at the scene of a bad car accident Sunday, performed what is being called a “miracle” and then disappeared.

It all unfolded around 9 a.m. on Missouri 19 near the town of Center. Katie Lentz, 19, had gotten into an accident and was pinned between the steering wheel and the seat, reports area news outlet KHQA. A rescue crew arrived at the scene and worked to get Lentz out of the mangled car for 45 minutes, but they were unable to free her.

As time passed, Lentz’s condition worsened. Eventually she asked if someone would pray out loud. That is when a gray-haired priest, dressed in all black with a clerical collar and carrying anointing oil, appeared and prayed over the girl.

Shortly after, the rescue workers were able to free Lentz and send her to the hospital. When they turned to thank the priest, he was gone. He isn’t in any of the dozens of photos taken from the accident, and no one has been able to identify him.

“I think it’s a miracle,” New London Fire Chief Raymond Reed, one of the rescuers at the scene of the accident, told KHQA. “I would say whether it was an angel that was sent to us in the form of a priest or a priest that became our angel, I don’t know. Either way, I’m good with it.”

The teen’s mother, Carla Churchill Lentz, feels the same.

She told USA Today that emergency workers said there is no way her daughter should have lived through the crash. She believes the man may have been “an angel dressed in priest’s attire because the Bible tells us there are angels among us.”

Father James Martin, a Jesuit priest and author of My Life with the Saints, has a different theory.

“Most likely the priest will be identified, and people will be able to thank him,” he told The Huffington Post in an emailed message Thursday. “If he’s not found, that may mean he wants to remain anonymous. Could it have been an angel? There are similar ‘angelic’ stories in the lives of the saints, when a figure inexplicably appears and cannot be located afterwards. There are angels, of course, but we tend to ascribe to angels anonymous acts that we find incredibly loving — when in fact human beings do incredibly loving things in hidden ways every day.”

On her Facebook page, Carla Churchill Lentz revealed her daughter has undergone surgery for sustained injuries, including a broken femur, broken ribs, a lacerated liver, a ruptured spleen and a bruised lung. She thanked everyone for their support and asked them to “pray out loud.”

A spokesperson from Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill., told HuffPost that Lentz is currently listed in serious condition.

Niagra Falls/National Park Deaths – What’s the Deal?

What’s the deal this year with the number of folks voluntarily eliminating themselves from the gene pool by “accidentally” falling in the water rushing over waterfalls or getting eaten by the wildlife in National Parks? There were the three folks at Yosemite Falls, and now, at Niagra Falls. And it is not just waterfalls – it’s been the deadliest year on record for tourists at the National Parks.

I mean – the way things are going the “Spirit of the Mists”, the boat that goes near the bottom of the Niagra Falls is going to need an airbag on the top to catch the falling bodies.

Considering that over 50% of the folks who wrap themselves in barrels to go over the Niagra Falls wind up dead…

It should be patently obvious nobody is swimming up the falls.

I’ve been to both Yosemite and Niagra Falls, and can tell you both are worth the trip. However, the sound and feel of the ground shaking as metric tons of water pour over the Niagra Falls ought to give anyone pause.

First time I went to Yellowstone was back when the bears still freely roamed the park in the 60’s. One of the thrills was being in a Double-Decker bus, when one of the grizzlies or smaller brown bears would stand up on his hind legs and look straight in through the window at you. Just in case you thought “Yogi” differentiated between you and any other snack food which might offer itself – they had the skin of a 10′ tall grizzly hanging in the old – Old Faithful Lodge entrance. It had been killed by a Park Ranger, and you could see the bullet holes where he first shot it 13 times with his 44-40 Winchester rifle, and then 6 more times with his pistol… After which the bear ate the Park Ranger before expiring…

Here – Police searching for a moron they did know about – found one that they didn’t know about:

Niagara Falls Search for Woman Turns Up Man’s Body

An odd footnote to the sad tale of the 19-year-old student swept over Niagara Fallson Sunday. An international search team dispatched in a helicopter to look for her body in Niagara Falls Gorge instead turned up the body of an unknown male. Authorities are working to identify him, reports KTLA. Meanwhile, more details are emerging about the tragic weekend incident: The woman, presumed drowned, was an international student from Japan.

The Toronto Star talks to a witness who saw her posing on the railing for a photo moments before she fell, wearing a bright red sweatshirt and holding an umbrella. The paper notes that earlier the same day, a 27-year-old man scaled a safety wall and tumbled into Niagara River Gorge; he and a friend who went in to save him were rescued, though the man fractured his leg.

First Rule of Boating

The first rule of boating is those big steel ships have the right of way if you are in a small boat. Darwin most likely came up with the idea of the “Survival of the fittest” shortly after seeing one of his ships run into a large immovable object. In any event, for anyone who ventures out on the water, whether in a rowboat or something a bit more expansive, it’s a real good idea to stay far away from the large commercial ships if they are moving. Stopping an oil tanker is an exercise covering 2-3 miles. Turning a 600′ boat can require over a mile of space, depending on speed.

Case in point – this collision:

The guys in the black boat are from a group that is trying to stop Japanese whaling. The guys in the big ship are obviously the whalers. Sort of like smashing into a bus with your Mini Cooper – or as in this case…

Having your Mini run over by a bus.

It’s fairly obvious the Japanese Whaler Captain had had enough of the tactics of the anti-Whaling warriors.

Now – for any conservative who doesn’t  yet understand the physics equations involved in the size differential here…

This is another  hint:
