Melissa Harris-Perry and Bad Career Moves

28 Feb

I am beginning to think Melissa Harris Perry (MHP) is living in an alternate universe. I mean, MSNBC isn’t exactly known for standing behind their people. Indeed the Network’s history as at deserting their staff at the least whiff of controversy is well established… I’ve long suggested they got the wrong bird as their logo. It should have been a chicken.

So why would our girl start a public spat with the cowardly peacock? Definitely a career limiting move.

Melissa Harris-Perry is out at MSNBC

Melissa Harris-Perry will not be back on MSNBC.

On Sunday morning, two days after the host’s private fight with management went public, an MSNBC spokesman confirmed that the channel is “parting ways” with her.

Earlier in the morning, Harris-Perry posted a photo on Twitter and said “Farewell #Nerdland,” a nickname for her weekend show, “Melissa Harris-Perry.”

“Inviting diverse new voices to table was a privilege,” she tweeted. “Grateful for years of support and criticism.”

Harris-Perry confirmed to CNNMoney that her representatives are in talks with MSNBC about an exit deal.

Harris-Perry had felt for months like MSNBC was trying to squeeze her off the air and take away her editorial point of view.

On Friday, she spoke out about the treatment, saying she had been “silenced” by MSNBC and placed in a form of cable news purgatory, having been pre-empted for two weekends in a row.

“Our show was taken — without comment or discussion or notice — in the midst of an election season,” she wrote in a letter to staff that was shared with her fans.

MSNBC and its rivals are all trying to squeeze higher ratings out of the chaotic primary season. The channel pre-empted her for campaign coverage with a “Place for Politics” title.

The same thing has happened to other shows, too, MSNBC said in a statement responding to her letter on Friday. The channel called her reaction “surprising, confusing and disappointing.”

But Harris-Perry said the February pre-emptions were merely the most visible manifestation of the channel’s marginalization of her show.

In the letter, she said “no one on the third floor,” where MSNBC’s executives work at 30 Rockefeller Center, “has even returned an email, called me, or initiated or responded to any communication of any kind from me for nearly a month.”

I don’t know if you’ve been paying attention to MSNBC over the past year or so but it’s been leaning rightward and I’m sure they were being passive-aggressive with MPH by pre-empting her show multiple times-basically frustrating her so she would quit.

First they expanded Morning Joe from three hours to four, canceled the Ed Show and reduced Rev. Al’s show from an hour daily to just a two hour Sunday show. Then they cancelled Joy Reid’s afternoon show and have her on other shows as a contributor.

What convinced me was when McWhorter was on All In with Chris Hayes arguing that cops should only be held to the same standards as criminals and Hayes just sat there like a knot on the log and let him get away with that bullcrap.

I guess MSNBC’s parent company is doing everything it can to ensure a Republican victory in November.

I think they are trying to find a way to increase audience. Unfortunately for them, liberals and progressives have a lot more to do with their time than sit and watch the boob-tube 12 hours a day and be told how to think like conservatives. The all-political format just doesn’t work…For a working, living audience.

The way that Faux works is to play a game of titillating their demographic with real or fake scandal, the school-child, let me let you in on a secret nobody else knows…and racism. They also stand by their people when they say something unpalatable.

MSNBC goes chickenshit – further driving away audience. Piers Morgan and Martin Bashir being examples.

For the pathetic MSNBC management – it is a lot easier to copy than innovate.

The other issue is loyalty and extremism.

Most conservatives think in black or white. So anything that’s left of Faux News is ‘liberal’ and they won’t be watching so even if CNN and MSNBC would go full right wing none of the FN viewers are going to switch.

Have to agree with that. However it looks like Faux may have lost some of that grip on their aged audience.

I’ve read that some of their audience is pissed from what they perceive as Fox doing the bidding of the GOP Establishment trashing Trump. I guess that could be true if you believe that Megyn Kelly going after Trump in that debate was planned.

I think they have tried their damnedest to derail Trump and failed. The real problem being all of the other candidates on the Clown Bus are losers as well. The Republican strategy of going further right after a loss has led the party off a cliff.

Faux has also been a big part of the lies told by their financial sponsors to the audience. We have watched for years as the politicians on the right make increasingly absurd and impossible moves like passing 183 Bills in the House trying to defund Obamacare – solely for the purpose of solidifying their “conservative credentials” when they know there is no chance any of the bills will be passed into law over a veto. All the symbolic bullshit while issues in the country boil over.

Trump scares the hell out of these guys because he stole their playbook, after years of conditioning the audience to uncritically accept and support lies over fact.

Starting in the early 90’s with Rush Limbaugh, the right wing media built personality cults. The followers became incapable of questioning the truthfulness of what was said. The average Trump follower’s comprehension level as such, is so low that beyond the sloganeering, few could tell you what exactly his programs to accomplish “Make America Great Again” are…

Or even why, in light of the continual recovery of the economy and jobs under Obama, from a disaster their last cult figure caused…

        America isn’t “great” today.

It is your standard, dictator propaganda personality cult…which is why if by some hook or crook, Trump does get elected…

The country is going off a cliff.
