Baltimore Settles With Freddy Gray Family for $6.4 Million

08 Sep

One of the reasons Republicans oppose Trial Lawyers is that the best way to reform a corrupt system is to make the results of that corruption (or racism) cost real money. Now I have no idea whether Baltimore officials will, can, or even know how to resolve the issues in Baltimore – but it has to be cheaper to the City and it’s taxpayers than continuing with the current system.

Racism literally shaves $2 Trillion a year off the US economy…Maybe it is time to stop feeding the racist trolls who are defending the status quo of unaccountability for some (usually white in their reference) folks.

A pile of money – sometimes the only way to motivate long resisted change

Freddie Gray’s Family To Receive $6.4 Million Wrongful Death Settlement: Report

The Washington Post reported Tuesday that Baltimore city officials have reached a $6.4 million wrongful death settlement in the death of Freddie Gray, citing two people with knowledge of the agreement.

Details of the proposed settlement could be released by city officials as early as Tuesday.

Gray, 25, sustained a severe spinal injury after being taken into custody by Baltimore police. He died on April 19. Autopsy reports showed Gray had a single “high-energy injury,” which was most likely caused by a “rough ride” in the back of a police van. He was handcuffed and not secured by a seatbelt, and the injury likely occurred when the van decelerated quickly. His death was ruled a homicide, based on police failure to follow safety procedures.

What happened before and after Gray’s arrest is still unclear. But the Baltimore Police Department admitted on April 24 that Gray had not received timely medical care. In May, all six officers involved in the death of Gray were charged and indicted.

The settlement would need approval from Baltimore’s Board of Estimates, which handles the city’s spending, according to The Washington Post. The Board is expected to meet on Wednesday. In addition to the payout, Baltimore police officers would be required to wear body cameras.

The city has paid out around $5.7 million in police brutality settlements since 2011, according to a 2014 Baltimore Sun analysis.

Oooooh. That’s a lot of money. So what’s going to happen to the officers? Walk away free?

Unknown at this point how the prosecution and trial of the Officers will go. The difference between this and the murderer of Mike Brown will be that this will be an open trial, in an open court …

      Instead of a Star Chamber.

Conviction nor all the money doesn’t fix corruption. If the cops are guilty end at this point, Baltimore has no choice. But corruption starts at the top with the mayor of Baltimore. This 64 million is a CYA for the mayor of Baltimore. She has control, authority and power to have corrected this years ago. Mayor needs to resign or ne removed. Start there and start firing the entire chain of command until you get to the cops? Clean it up.

Usually you have to in the criminal case before the civil. There has been no trial or conviction. The 6.4 million dollars is a lot of money given prior to a conviction. Even if the officers are all found guilty and are hung, nothing has been resolved. If there’s corruption, it flows downhill. Start with the mayor who has control over the city police department. Don’t you indo it interesting that they gave this huge amount of money before the trial. Mayor is covering her behind. Why? She is part of the problem. Why has he ignored these cases? She controls it. She is paying ppl off do they will leave her alone. Get a new mayor! Why has she not located funds to help communities? She is living like a queen and she knows it.

Not true, Cam. Misconduct is fairly consistent across the country. See the link.

Cam, I don’t understand why you want to change the subject here.

The corruption in the police departments nationwide is deep and goes back generations so no single mayor or governor is going to uproot that corruption in that short amount of time.

Have you been paying attention to what the Baltimore PD did shortly after six of their fellow officers were arrested—they staged a work slowdown and that gave the impression that the mayor wanted a less safe Baltimore.

Public safety is the one thing that all citizens hold officials accountable for and the police undermined that and tried to blame it on the mayor just because the City Attorney decided to hold those accountable for their actions.
