MMA Star Rhonda Rousey Challenges Floyd Mayweather

11 Aug

Bit of advice Floyd – this is one woman you better not try smacking around.

Ronda Rousey: I Could Beat Floyd Mayweather In ‘No-Rules’ Fight

Ronda Rousey says she can take Floyd Mayweather in a “no-rules” fight.

In a Reddit AMA on Monday night, the UFC women’s bantamweight champion was asked if she could beat the boxer “in a ruleless fight.”

Her response (emphasis hers):

Floyd is one of the best boxers of all time. He would definitely beat me in a boxing match. I unfortunately don’t get into “matches”. I fight for a living. In a no rules fight, I believe I can beat anyone on this planet. Boxing is a sweet science with strict rules that I respect very much and aspire every day to improve at. But you said ruleless fight, and that’s my honest answer.

The comment comes just days after Mayweather took a verbal swipe at Rousey.

“I’ve yet to see any MMA fighter, or other boxer, make over $300 million in 36 minutes,” Mayweather said on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” on Thursday. “When she can do that, then call me.”

The two have been trading verbal jabs for more than a year, with Mayweather famously saying, “I don’t even know who he is” when asked about her last summer.

Rousey got some sweet revenge last month, beating Mayweather for the “Best Fighter” award at the ESPYs.

I wonder how Floyd feels being beat by a woman for once,” she said after the win, referring to his long and well-documented history of domestic violence. “I’d like for him to pretend to not know who I am now.”

Rousey also referred to his history of violence against women in May, telling Access Hollywood the two would probably never fight “unless we ended up dating.”

No holds barred? I’d put my money on Rhonda if the fight ever reached the ground.

Rousey is very vulnerable to an opponent with advanced footwork and evasion skills. If you’ve watched her here-to-date, she always charges and swings, closes, and defaults to the clinch. Anybody who can smoothly evade that charge and start landing punishing jabs in transit, can pick apart her two-dimensional game.

Not saying Floyd Mayweather is that cat, but he IS most notable for his skills as a defender. Question begged is could he stick and move and move and stick punishingly enough to take the wind out of her sails. Rhonda, for her part has never been repeatedly hit by any puncher with the more developed power of a professional boxer. Taking off the big padded boxing gloves would further increase the damage potential of every single punch landed.

Rhonda charges, because she is stronger than almost all, if not all of the women she has fought in MMA. Rhonda also won the world women’s championship in Judo. Meaning she probably fought a lot tougher opponents in the Judo ring, including stronger opponents. Floyd is unquestionably faster.

The question would be decided in my mind, whether he could hit her hard enough – before she gets her hands on him. I doubt she could hurt him striking. Boxers, however don’t tend to have a lot of leg strength, because they don’t use their legs for weapons like MMA or Thai Style fighters. Women also tend to have more lower body strength – meaning lots of kicks to the legs, and in a no-holds barred – the knees. She is 5’7″ tall, which means the advantage of reach would likely lean her way in kicking vs punching.

Second, with that Judo skill, if she gets even one hand on him in a clinch, he likely is going down into her world – which is about as bad a place as trying to go toe to toe with Mayweather in a standup boxing match, despite her not being able to match Floyd strength wise. I was a wrestler in college, and I have seen more than one 130 lb guy take a 200 lb football player and tie him in knots…And that was with legal, non damaging moves – many of which they allow in MMA such as the Camorra, which can easily break an arm.

Lastly it is the timing. Boxers train for the standup, and have incredible skill in both slipping and delivering punches against guys doing the same thing in a similar style. MMA Fighters have to train to defend against and defeat boxers, as well as people with other styles. Boxers don’t train against Karate, or other types.

Anyway – it ain’t never gonna happen. 1 Because Floyd could seriously hurt her, and 2 because she could seriously hurt Floyd.

Be a hell of a payout on the Pay-per-View though!
