If There Were a 1% Debate… MLK vs. Romney

20 Jan

What would MLK do? What would MLK say?

There is very little evidence that MLK would have anything good to say about today’s Republican Party. Indeed – for many folks today’s Republican have gone about as low as you can go.

Here is a mash up of points by MLK and “Willard” Romney…

That’s the wrong debate. It should be between Dr. King and Barack Obama.

“But we must never forget. This is not a war of choice. This is a war of necessity. Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again.” — Barack Obama

“I was increasingly compelled to see the war as an enemy of the poor and to attack it as such.” Martin L. King

“In the ghettoes of the North over the last three years — especially the last three summers, as I have walked among the desperate, rejected, and angry young men, I have told them that Molotov cocktails and rifles would not solve their problems. I have tried to offer them my deepest compassion while maintaining my conviction that social change comes most meaningfully through nonviolent action. But they ask — and rightly so — ‘what about Vietnam?’ They ask if our own nation wasn’t using massive doses of violence to solve its problems, to bring about the changes it wanted. Their questions hit home, and I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today — my own government. For the sake of those boys, for the sake of this government, for the sake of the hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence, I cannot be silent.”– Martin L. King

Even though I believe at least part of the “War on Terrorism” is justified, I tend to agree with your point that President Obama should look closely at what King said. We are just finishing a war of naked aggression, sparked almost entirely over American politico-corporate greed for oil in Iraq.

But the question which this all begs is –

What would King hsve to say to the likes of Al Quaeda?
