Bishop Eddie Long Sued for Sexual Coercion of Male Church Members

22 Sep

Another in a long line of anti-gay church leaders…

Who turn out to be closet queens and abusers?

Let this one percolate for a while, as either damning or exculpatory evidence should be forthcoming fairly quickly.

Men allege sexual coercion by prominent Atlanta pastor

Two Georgia men have filed a lawsuit claiming that prominent Atlanta, Georgia, pastor Eddie Long coerced them into sex.

The suits, filed Tuesday in DeKalb County, Georgia, allege that Long used his position as a spiritual authority and bishop to coerce young male members and employees of his New Birth Missionary Baptist Church into sex.

“Defendant Long has a pattern and practice of singling out a select group of young male church members and using his authority as Bishop over them to ultimately bring them to a point of engaging in a sexual relationship,” the suits allege.

Long is considered one of the nation’s top black preachers. His church has more 25,000 members, according to the suit, and was the site of Coretta Scott King’s 2006 funeral, attended by then-President George W. Bush and three previous presidents. King was the widow of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.

The pastor took one plaintiff, Anthony Flagg, 21, on overnight trips to a half-dozen American cities in recent years, Flagg’s suit alleges.

“Long shared a bedroom and engaged in intimate sexual contact with plaintiff Flagg including kissing, massaging, masturbating of plaintiff Flagg by defendant Long and oral sexual contact,” the suit says.

Long took the other plaintiff, Maurice Murray Robinson, 20, to Auckland, New Zealand, in October 2008 for his 18th birthday and engaged in oral sex with him, Robinson’s suit alleges.

“Following the New Zealand Trip, Defendant Long regularly engaged in sexual touching, and other sexual acts with Plaintiff Robinson,” Robinson’s suit alleges.

Long spokesman Art Franklin said Tuesday that “we categorically deny the allegations.”

“It is very unfortunate that someone has taken this course of action,” he said. “Our law firm will be able to respond once attorneys have had an opportunity to review the lawsuit.”

Long frequently denounces homosexual behavior. A 2007 article in the Southern Poverty Law Center’s magazine called him “one of the most virulently homophobic black leaders in the religiously based anti-gay movement.”

Eddie Long always struck me as a zoot suit wearing fraud. I can’t speak to this specific situation, but that guy has never struck me as someone genuine. Many people get caught up in the pomp and circumstance put on stage in the church which allows guys like this to pimp from the pulpit.

One of these days folks are going to figure out that there is a level of “organization” in Religion where the church inevitably becomes the antithesis of Religion.

The bigger the church – the bigger the crime.

“The bigger the church – the bigger the crime.”

I agree. All of them have the same business model nowadays–everyone wants to have a mega church like Potter’s House (I can’t remember the guy’s name who runs it). Look, I’m not here to proselytize as I don’t believe in jamming my religious beliefs down someone’s throat and I’m certainly no theologian, but it seems to me that if the churches were organized on the model presented by Jesus Christ, there’d be no mega churches in the first place. What has occurred is that they’ve hit upon this business model to make money and once that becomes the focus, various other maladaptive behaviors become evident. What we’re seeing here IMO is a variation of the sickness that’s running through the catholic church as well.

The bottom line is that you can’t serve man and God at the same time. At bottom, that’s the issue.

I agree with you Greg. The first action of any organization is to ensure it’s survival – even after the original purpose of the organization is accomplished.

That is why you have the Government Agencies no one has ever heard of, sticking around for decades, without any real job to do.

Once a Church reaches a certain size, it stops becoming a church and becomes a business, whose business it is to make money to continue it’s survival…

Often to the sole benefit of one or a small handful of individuals.

Richard Pryor was our prophet, we just did not know it, man raised in a brothel and gigged on America. Next one: Jimmy Baldwin, gay, black, and radical before his time. Make your children read, our finest, nothing new, just the imagines and voices have changed.

Long has a ministry that supposedly turns gay men straight. Say What?!?!?

A few years back I used to post at a discussion group where one of the regular posters was a proud member of Long’s church, and a “reformed homosexual.” Used to post scripture and verse of what ever Long preached on Sunday, and moralize about being celibate.

Basically, gay men were being instructed to abstain from sex, to be celibate, because if you aren’t having sex at all, you can’t be a homosexual, right? And they are taught to suppress their sex drive.

A ministry like that attracts gay men and boys, and I don’t think humans can intentionally, totally suppress their sex drive.

To buy into that religion “cures” homosexuality, BB – you have to buy into the belief that “gayness” is a moral deficiency…

      And not a biologic difference.

Lately I’ve been debating don’t ask, don’t tell with a few people. It’s amazing how unsophisticated so much of the population is, and how much christian dogma dominates the thought process of so many americans.

It takes a strong willed person, and years of self-training, like a zen monk. It is an exceptional person. Afro-American Religion in America went way of course

Wow… Eddie Long or any such individual in this position is just human. He will not the first or last individual to be in this predicament. Because they are ordaining anybody to become ministers in the church. I know a few individuals that were ordained that left me saying… WTF!

Know a few ministers who led a life of sin before getting “the call”, Yes… It’s considered a badge of honor by some.

The ministry is also a natural place for pedophiles to hide. Just like being a teacher or Boy Scout Leader, the job puts them in a position of moral authority over their intended victims. Certainly not all Ministers, teachers, or Boy Scout leaders are bad guys – just a minority. Unfortunately the damage they can do is huge, and may impact dozens, if not hundreds of victims.

I’ll keep an open mind about whether Eddie Long is guilty or not – even though the accusations fit an all too familiar pattern.
