Glennn Becks Lies About Chicago Olympics

01 Oct

From the White House

Beck Lie – Glenn Beck said, Vancouver lost, how much was it? they lost a billion dollars when they had the Olympics.”  [Transcript, Glenn Beck Show, 9/29/09]
Truth – VANCOUVER’S OLYMPICS WILL NOT TAKE PLACE UNTIL 2010. Vancouver will host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games from February 12 – 28, 2010 and March 12-21, 2010, respectively.
[Vancouver2010.com, accessed 9/29/09]
Beck Lie – Beck’s guest, FOX News contributor Pat Caddell, said, “[Obama] is going to go [to Copenhagen] with Valerie Jarrett who was last seen with the NEA pumping up their use of, you know, money.” [Transcript, Glenn Beck Show, 9/29/09]
Truth – VALERIE JARRETT WAS NOT ON THE NEA CONFERENCE CALL. Valerie Jarrett was not a participant in the August 10, 2009 United We Serve/NEA conference call.
Beck Lie Beck’s guest Caddell said, “Chicago is closing the government several days a week because they cannot afford to be open. They are going to go and reward — this is the biggest scandal.” [Transcript, Glenn Beck Show, 9/29/09]
Truth – CHICAGO HAS HAD ONE REDUCED-SERVICE DAY IN 2009, AND WILL HAVE TWO MORE ON THE FRIDAY AFTER THANKSGIVING AND ON CHRISTMAS EVE. [CBS Chicago, 8/17/09]
Beck lie – Beck asked, “Is it possible that she (Valerie Jarrett) is going to benefit if the Olympics come to Chicago?” Caddell responded, “Well, that’s the word. She has certainly had a lot of dealings going on in real estate.” [Transcript, Glenn Beck Show, 9/29/09]
Truth – UPON ENTERING GOVERNMENT, VALERIE JARRETT DIVESTED ALL HER REAL ESTATE INVESTMENT HOLDINGS EXCEPT FOR A SINGLE INVESTMENT THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OLYMPIC BID.
This is standard for senior Administration officials, and has been for nearly a century. If you will remember, Dick Cheney owned 433,334 Stock options for Halliburton – which created quite a furor after Halliburton was awarded over $20 billion in no-bid contracts by 2005 based on the Iraq War driving up the value of those options to over $8 million (a 3,281 percent jump from 2002). On entering office, the Dick had put those stock into a blind trust, with the proceeds to go to 3 “charities”, including the University of Wyoming, his home state.
From BTx3’s Research –
Beck Lie – Caddell said “All the events will take place only inside Chicago.”
TruthPreliminary soccer matches would be played in several venues, of which a few will see temporarily renaming as the IOC does not allow corporate naming rights sponsorships to be used for venue names. These venues include the Meadowlands Stadium (to be completed in 2010 with naming sponsor to be announced) in East Rutherford, New Jersey; the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California; Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (which would be temporarily renamed “Philadelphia Field” for the Olympics); the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri (“St. Louis Dome”); FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland (“Landover Field”); and TCF Bank Stadium (“Minneapolis Stadium”), a new stadium which opened in September 2009 on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Swimming events were originally planned to be held in the West Side’s Douglas Park, but in a December 2008 plan revision the swimming was moved to Washington Park and a velodrome for track and BMX cycling events was moved from Northerly Island to Douglas Park. The Cycling hub will be in Madison, Wisconsin.

Beck Lie – The Olympics will be a financial disaster!
Truth – The Los Angeles Games in 1984 were the first to make a profit since 1932, scooping a $1.4bn windfall for the city. Athens in 2004 made a $155 million direct profit (just the profit made by the Olympic Committee). Bejing in 2008 made a $170 million direct profit. Atlanta in 1996 also made a profit.
However, the real benefits of hosting the Games are often to the host country’s economy. South Korea’s economy grew 12% in the year of the Seoul Olympics. The Sydney Games in 2000 boosted the Australian economy by $3.3bn. But perhaps the most successful Olympics of modern times were the Barcelona Games in 1992, which marked the start of an economic and cultural renaissance for the Catalan capital.

I remember he was on The View, and they asked him about his loose grasp on the truth. He said it wasn’t his job to check the facts, he’s just an entertainer.

Then he ought to be on Comedy Central, instead of a “news” Channel.

KO, is calling a a speech from the South Carolinian BFF of John McCann, the “Graham Slam.”

Senator Lindsey Graham at the Washington Museum this afternoon expressed a critical, but dispassionate condemnation of Glen Beck and the birth-er-isms types on the far-right. For me, it was a minimally satisfying script that I think doesn’t comes down hard enough, nor calls enough folks out for their ignorance. He spoke kindly and was generous to the POTUS however, so that made up for his inadequacies.

Graham I’m sure was thrown overboard after voting for Sotomayor. Centrism is a tricky path to walk, but I hope he can have some success in coaxing others to call out the lunatic fringe.

Is that the same Pat Caddell who ran Mondale’s campaign in 1984? At least they won Minnesota!
