Boston Marathon Bombing

Now…For the work of finding out who is responsible for this. It is impossible to say at this time whether this is an act of Foreign or Domestic Terrorism. At least to reports at this time, the bombs appear to have been relatively crude devices made from either home made or cobbled together explosives wrapped in nails and screws to function as shrapnel, which suggests they were made with off-the-shelf materials purchased here in the United States. There is still confusion on whether there were more bombs.

Yet another tragedy.

Arline Security Incident in Flight to NYC

This one is strange. I am a frequent flyer, and I can’t imagine anyone wanting to spend a moment longer than necessary in one of those tiny on-board bathrooms on a commercial airliner. They aren’t designed to be comfortable intentionally – to encourage passengers to spend as little time as possible – instead of taking a magazine to read half the flight preventing other passengers from having access.

So if 3 passengers lock themselves in, and refuse to come out – there’s a problem. a BIG problem. And with airplane food being confined to a bag of chips and a stale cookie anymore…

It wasn’t something they ate.

Definitely no room for a Jacuzzi...

Military jets safely escort flight to NYC

Two fighter jets escorted a New York-bound American Airlines flight from Los Angeles after three passengers locked themselves in the bathroom Sunday, the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, officials said.

A law enforcement official said it wasn’t thought to be terrorism, and American Airlines spokesman Tim Smith said, “In our eyes, it’s a big nothing.”

The North American Aerospace Defense Command scrambled two F-16 jets to shadow Flight 34 until it landed safely at New York’s Kennedy Airport at 4:10 p.m. Sunday, the Transportation Security Administration said in a statement.

The nature of the incident was unclear, but the passengers locked themselves in the bathroom and were still inside when the plane landed, the law enforcement official said. The official was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Law enforcement met the flight and will interview passengers, the TSA statement said. The FBI responded to the airport.

The jets intercepted the flight about 100 miles west of New York and shadowed it until it landed, said John Cornelio, spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command. He described the measure as precautionary.

Smith said a “security concern” was brought to the airline’s attention but the plane’s captain never declared any sort of security threat and never requested law enforcement help.

He said the crew used “normal procedures” to assess the circumstances and the plane landed as planned.

New York has been in a heightened state of security after federal officials received a credible but uncorroborated tip of a car bomb plot on the anniversary in either New York or Washington.

Explosion(s) In Norway Capital, Oslo. Possible Terrorist Attack. Casualties Unknown

This just breaking -

Conservatives and Radicalization

Hitler had the Jews to blame…

Lenin had the bourgeois…

Seems that every totalitarianism movement has one… Somebody to blame.

To be honest, right about now if I were President Obama – I would be bringing the full power of the Federal Law enforcement apparatus…

Against the radical right.

Biggest threat to this country isn’t “radical Islam”… It’s American born right wing whackjobs out of control.

Terrorist Attack at Moscow’s Domdedovo Airport

A suicide bomber set off an explosion this morning in the baggage arrival section of the Domodedovo Airport, which is the principal International Airport in Moscow. At least 39 people were killed and over 160 were injured.

The commentator here talks about “Airport Security”. Unfortunately the one area of an airport which is not secured is the arrivals area. In most airports, people can enter or exit that area from the Arrivals area of the airport at will without going through any security scanning. It would not have been difficult for a terrorist to sneak into that area pretending to be someone meeting an arriving passenger.

The ugly truth is Airport Security is really about protecting the expensive airplanes and facilities… Not the passengers.

No word on who the terrorists might be, or what their motivation is yet. Russia, like America certainly has a large enough whack-job population for this to have been a “statement” by a crazy.

Arizona – “The Mecca of Prejudice and Bigotry”

A Map Published by Palin's "Reload" Campaign, felt by Many to Encourage Assassination

The Pima County Sheriff, among others –  blames the assassination attempt on Giffords, resulting in 6 dead and 18 wounded on the heated political rhetoric employed by conservatives. This was not the first time gunfire has been directed against Rep. Giffords. Police report that her office was shot at, and vandalized during the Health Care Debate. Police now are looking for at least one other “person of interest” in connection with the murders. Police have not commented on what role, if any, the person may have played.

After the same type of “guns” and “kill the liberals” rhetoric led to the bombing of the Murrah Building by Timothy McVeigh, the Anthrax attacks on liberal news people and elected officials, dozens of mailings of “powdered substances” to government officials, and the plot by whack-jobs to assassinate President Obama

It is very difficult to give any credence to the claim that the right wingers don’t know what they are doing.

This is nothing more than Domestic Terrorism, and should be treated by Law Enforcement and the Courts as such.

Shooting throws spotlight on state of U.S. political rhetoric

The tenor of American political rhetoric became a centerpiece in the national debate over Saturday’s attack by a gunman in Tucson, Arizona, that killed six people and left local Democratic congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords with a bullet wound to the brain.

Public leaders and others expressed sorrow about “a tragedy for the entire country,” as President Obama put it — a total of 18 people allegedly shot by 22-year-old Jared Lee Loughner.

But officials also voiced dismay Saturday over the possibility that highly polarized rhetoric in the conservative hotbed of Arizona may have played a role in the assassination attempt of the Democratic congresswoman, who was targeted during a meet-and-greet with constituents in a shopping center. A federal judge, a girl age 9, and four other people died in the mass killing.

While not stating a motive for the shootings, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik in Tucson used a nationally televised press conference to condemn the tone of political discourse in his state. He charged that public debate is now “vitriolic rhetoric,” which has rendered Arizona “the mecca for prejudice and bigotry.”

Dupnik suggested that such rhetoric can have deadly consequences.

“We need to do some soul searching,” Dupnik told reporters. “It’s the vitriolic rhetoric that we hear day in and day out from people in the radio business and some people in the TV business. (more…)

The Al Quaeda Bamba – Hispanic Recruits to Radical Islam

Another gift from the Prison Industrial Complex…

Hispanic Islamic Terrorists.

Another point here, any dream conservatives had of simply profiling Middle Eastern or Southeast Asian people would catch “terrorists” is nothing more than you typical conservative racism, with the typical conservative result…Failure.

Statistically, black and Hispanic folks tend to be more religious, and belong to, or go to church. With the politicization of some christian groups on the right, and the radicalization of christian fundamentalism – you have to ask the questions as to whether these young men are running from something – as well as the question of whether they are running to something in embracing radical Islam.

Officials Worry About Some Latino Converts To Islam

Antonio Martinez - Arrested For Trying To Blow Up Military Recruitment Center

The FBI arrested Antonio Martinez, a 21-year-old Muslim convert, Wednesday and charged him with plotting to blow up a military recruitment center. There are two things about this case that make it particularly interesting to counterterrorism officials. The first is that Martinez appears to have been radicalized in the U.S. The second is that he is Latino. Latino converts to radical Islam have been connected to terrorism cases in this country with increasing frequency — and officials are trying to understand why.

The FBI began tracking Martinez, who also went by the name Muhammad Hussain, in October. That’s when, according to the criminal complaint against him, Martinez allegedly struck up a conversation with an FBI source and told him that he wanted to attack U.S. military personnel.

Martinez allegedly believed that the U.S. had long been at war with Muslims, and he said that Muslim brothers needed to strike back. After taping hours of Martinez’s conversations, the FBI ended up providing him with what he thought was a car bomb. He allegedly parked it outside an armed forces recruiting station in Catonsville, Md., on Wednesday and was arrested after he allegedly tried to detonate it.

The explosives were inert and no one, Justice Department officials said, was ever in any danger. While there is already some discussion about Martinez having been entrapped by a terrorism sting operation launched by the FBI, officials say to concentrate on that misses another wrinkle in the case: Why do a small number of Latinos in this country seem to convert not just to Islam but to a radical form of it?

Jose Padillia - Al Quaeda Trainee

“In some ways, it is not the volume [of conversion] necessarily. It is not like folks are worried about vast communities or subcommunities of Latinos joining al-Qaida,” said Juan Zarate, a former deputy national security adviser in the Bush administration who is now with the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “What has got people’s attention is the nature of individuals who have been caught in this web.”

The individuals involved have been at the center of what terrorism officials consider important cases. There is Jose Padilla, the former Chicago native who pleaded guilty to training with al-Qaida; or Daniel Maldonado, a Latino-American who was one of the first U.S. citizens to join an al-Qaida affiliate group in Somalia. Officials also point to Bryant Neal Vinas, a Latino from Long Island who found himself in al-Qaida’s inner circle a couple of years ago. He talked to the group’s leadership about how to attack the Long Island Rail Road and, according to officials close to the case, “has been a gold mine of information about al-Qaida ever since.”

Daniel Maldonado - Joined Al Quaeda in Somalia and Trained as a Suicide Bomber

“It’s both the nature of these individuals but also their case studies, the substantive dimensions of their work, and who they are in contact with, and what they represent that I think is why Latino converts have garnered some attention from counterterrorism analysts and the community,” Zarate said. “These are cases people are still following. They are still instructive.”

One of the reasons these officials are interested in Latino converts is that al-Qaida appears to be. The terrorist group has specifically recruited Latinos under the assumption that they could move in and around the United States without arousing suspicion.

Bryant Neal Vinas Joined Al Quaeda and Attacked US Forces in Afghanistan

Before Wednesday’s arrest, the most recent terrorism case involving a Latino happened over the summer. That’s when two New Jersey men, Mohammed Alessa and Carlos Almonte, were arrested as they boarded a plane for Somalia. They allegedly planned to join the ranks of a terrorist group there called al-Shabab. The New York Police Department, the FBI and New Jersey law enforcement had had the two men under surveillance for years; Almonte, in particular, became of interest because he was Latino and allegedly so firmly embraced radical Islam.

“Carlos Almonte was of Dominican heritage, a naturalized U.S. citizen, from a middle-class family; his father was a school bus driver; and he grew up in a Catholic family,” said Mitch Silber, the head of the New York Police Department’s intelligence unit. “And as Almonte started to change, he dropped his non-Muslim friends and his change was visible to others.”

Carlos Allmonte, the "Jersey Jihadist" Joined Al Quaeda in Somalia

Almonte allegedly started hanging out with members of Revolution Muslim, an Islamist group in New York, and joined their online chats. He began talking about what he saw as America’s war on Islam. Those are two things that he apparently had in common with the suspect in this latest case, Martinez.

Officials say the Internet isn’t the only place radicalizing these Latino converts. Authorities have been tracking an increasing number of Latino converts who embrace radical Islam in prison. The concern, Zarate says, is that prison recruits will redirect their criminal energies and engage in terrorism.

“I think that it is in that intersection with prison radicalization, gang culture, religious zealotry that you have a potential problem,” Zarate said. “I wouldn’t say it is a wave, but it is a potential problem authorities watch for.”

Congo Women Fight Back Against Rape

This takes a lot of courage in a country ruled by the gun.

DR Congo women march against sexual violence

(Mrs. Lembe Kabila is DR Congo’s First Lady)

Olive Lembe Kabila headed the rally in the town of Bukavu in the east of the country, where Congolese and foreign armed groups have operated for years.

Last week, the UN said government troops were raping and killing women in the same villages where hundreds were raped by rebels in July and August.

The country’s defence minister has denied any soldiers were involved.

On Friday, the head of the UN mission in DR Congo, Monusco, said an estimated 15,000 people had been raped there last year.

‘Regaining dignity’

The demonstration led by Mrs Lembe Kabila saw thousands of women walk through the streets of Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province.

Many of them carried banners with slogans such as “No to sexual terrorism”, according to the AFP news agency.

“Coming here is important because violence towards women is used systematically as a weapon of war,” said Miriam Nobre of World March of Women, which organised the march.

Nene Rukunghu, a doctor at a hospital in Bukavu, said the international community finally seemed interested in DR Congo’s problems.

“We must fight against impunity, so that the perpetrators of violence are punished, to allow women to regain their dignity. Despite what they endure, Congolese women are strong and able to stand up again.”

Why Bin Lauden Won the War

It has become obvious to members of the intelligentsia what has been obvious to some of us for a very long time…

Bin Lauden, and Al Quada have won the “War of Terrorism”.

It started with the entirely unnecessary and illegitimate invasion of Iraq, and has gone steadily downhill since then.

The objective of international terrorism to to fool larger enemies into giving up their freedom, and into becoming frozen by fear. We had an entire presidential administration under the Bushit which used that fear to shred our Constitution and Laws. Today’s Republican Party, serving as little more than Faux New’s sock puppet, and the Tea Party’s legitimacy – revels in promoting fear for political gain. When you see the Tea Bagger clowns marching down our streets to protest the building of a Muslim Religious Center near the site of the WTC Buildings…

If you haven’t figured it our yet – Bin Lauden won.

Back during the bad old days of the Bushit Administration I argued that the best response to the downing of the 110 Story WTC Buildings…

Was to build 200 story buildings on the same spot.

But the chicken littles won that argument…

Just like Bin Lauden has won the war.

Ted Koppel hits one out of the park with this one – finally pointing out what should have been obvious.

Ted Koppel: Nine years after 9/11, let’s stop fulfilling bin Laden’s goals

The attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, succeeded far beyond anything Osama bin Laden could possibly have envisioned. This is not just because they resulted in nearly 3,000 deaths, nor only because they struck at the heart of American financial and military power. Those outcomes were only the bait; it would remain for the United States to spring the trap.

The goal of any organized terrorist attack is to goad a vastly more powerful enemy into an excessive response. And over the past nine years, the United States has blundered into the 9/11 snare with one overreaction after another. Bin Laden deserves to be the object of our hostility, national anguish and contempt, and he deserves to be taken seriously as a canny tactician. But much of what he has achieved we have done, and continue to do, to ourselves. Bin Laden does not deserve that we, even inadvertently, fulfill so many of his unimagined dreams.

It did not have to be this way. The Bush administration’s initial response was just about right. The calibrated combination of CIA operatives, special forces and air power broke the Taliban in Afghanistan and sent bin Laden and the remnants of al-Qaeda scurrying across the border into Pakistan. The American reaction was quick, powerful and effective — a clear warning to any organization contemplating another terrorist attack against the United States. This is the point at which President George W. Bush should have declared “mission accomplished,” with the caveat that unspecified U.S. agencies and branches of the military would continue the hunt for al-Qaeda’s leader. The world would have understood, and most Americans would probably have been satisfied. (more…)

Iran State Sponsored Terrorisim and Mass Murder

This one could rip Iran apart, further adding fuel to the firs that the Islamic Fundamentalist Government has not only participated in International Terrorism, but committed mass murder against it’s own citizens.

A letter rumored to be written by opposition leader Mir-Hossein Mousavi 20 years ago has resurfaced and is lighting up Iran’s blogosphere. Omid Memarian on why the letter could open decades of dark secrets and bitter rivalries.

BS Top - Memarian Mousavi LetterHidden away for more than 20 years, a mystery letter suddenly reappeared last week.

The letter, supposedly written by a Tehran insider turned opposition leader, was explosive: it alleged that Iran sponsors terrorism abroad.

Like a middle manager ignored by his bosses, the letter writer expressed frustration that he was kept in the dark about Iran’s involvement in events that he described as “operations abroad.”

“After an airplane is hijacked, we are informed; After a machine gun opens fire on a street in Lebanon and its sound is heard, we learn about it; After explosives are found on our pilgrims in Jeddah, I am informed of it,” said the letter, allegedly written by Mir-Hossein Mousavi, the leader of the Green Movement that sparked massive protests after last year’s fraudulent election.

The letter is an embarrassment for the Iranian government, which has always denied involvement in terrorist attacks beyond its borders. And no matter the origin of this mysterious letter or why it suddenly reappeared, it quickly set the Iranian blogosphere on fire. And for those outside the country, it became a window on the secretive world of Iranian politics.

Mousavi was prime minister when the letter was first published and some say this was his resignation letter. After it was initially published in 1988, he disappeared from politics for decades, reinventing himself last year as the leader of the strongest opposition movement the Islamic Republic has ever seen.

Neither Mousavi nor people close to him have questioned the letter’s authenticity which was reposted by websites including Balatarin.com, the Iranian version ofDigg.com, making it a viral sensation.

The original recipient of the letter was President Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, who has tried to quell the demands of the so-called Green Movement that protested the results of the Iranian elections last year as fraudulent.

The letter was first published in a newspaper by the first president of the Iranian republic who today lives in exile in France. Abolhassan Banisadr re-published the letter on his website, Jomhoori Eslami (Islamic Republic), last week.

“This letter has historical significance now,” Banisadr told The Daily Beast in a telephone interview. “At the time of its initial publication it was significant, too, because it clearly stated that the Iranian regime was involved in terrorist activities abroad; that these actions were not sporadic, but that it was the Iranian government that was engaged in terrorist activities.”

Neither Khamenei nor President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has commented on the letter. But people in Iran speculate that the letter re-emerged at this moment because Mousavi was threatening to reveal secrets in connection with the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, having been accused by current Iranian authorities of losing the war. And some hope that Mousavi’s secrecy standoff with the government might cast light on another dark moment in Iran’s history–the mass executions of political prisoners in 1988, which reportedly cost the lives of thousands of people. Within Iran, the executions are a taboo subject. But last month, Mousavi alluded to them, suggesting that his cabinet was kept in the dark.

Jon Stewart Hammers President Obama on Broken Promises

This is fair and tough criticism of President Obama’s failure to restore the rule of law which was so badly ripped to shreds during the Bushit Administration. Stewart is dead on in this one, and this has been a major failure of the Obama Administration.

What Did You Do In the War on Terror, Daddy?

The epitome of stupid-shit brought to you Republicans (And Joltin Joe Lieberman) is a bill to deny American Citizenship to terrorists.

Somebody please explain to me why some terrorist wannabe, who is willing to blow up a damn airplane at 35,000 feet – with his ass going down with everyone else…

Give’s a rat’s ass about being an American Citizen?

I mean…Is this bill going to to apply to our own home grown right wing whack jobs…

Or those with just “A-Rab” sentimentality? I mean – is there an exception for whackjobs who blow up Government Building and Day Care Centers?

And if we do deport our own home grown right wing crazies, unlike Islamic fundamentalists who could find pleasant waterfront  homes and new occupations in mayhem in Somalia – WTF wants them?

“Let me get this straight Billy-Bob, you got your dumb, white ass tossed out of the wealthiest country in the world, because you didn’t want to pay taxes… Which are lower than the next 17 richest countries? Which all, BTW happen to be socialized! You better get used to living a country with a brown or black face as President, because your dumb ass is not coming here to cause trouble…”

I’m beginning to think the best way to win the “War on Terror”…

Is to ship them our dumb-assed Republicans (and “Independent”).

Bill aims to strip certain Americans of their citizenship

A bipartisan group of legislators on Thursday introduced legislation in Congress to strip citizenship from any American found to be involved in terrorism.

If the Terrorist Expatriation Act passes, an American would lose citizenship if found to have provided material support or resources to a foreign terrorist organization — as designated by the secretary of state — or participated in actions against the United States.

Sens. Joe Lieberman, I-Connecticut, and Scott Brown, R-Massachusetts, co-sponsored the bill. An identical bill is being introduced in the House by Reps. Jason Altmire, D-Pennsylvania, and Charlie Dent, R-Pennsylvania. (more…)

Another Domestic Terrorist Whackjob…

Interesting the limited information about the attempted Times Square bombing by car bomb. The description provided by police so far on the makeup of the bomb indicates it was decidedly amateurish, which would seem to let the air out of claims by the Pakastani Taliban that they did it. The methodology and tools used would also seem to let any of the Domestic Militia types off the hook. Indeed, the bomber appears to have left so many potential clues – that unless this was a massive act of subterfuge, and not a real attempt at bombing…

The bomber would have to be a nutcase, or a teen without any real skills – or association with people with skills such as ex-Military, Militias, or a hate group. Since the Oklahoma City bombing, gathering materials such as Ammonium Nitrate and powdered aluminum without a documented Agricultural or industrial use is a way to earn a quick visit from the FBI and local Law Enforcement – which could possibly explain the choice of materials. But that makes little sense, since Police now say the would-be bomber tried to use 4 bags of regular fertilizer – possibly not knowing that it isn’t explosive.

So the question is – was this a real bombing, or was the objective to terrorize by threat?

Wanted – Dead of Alive, Anwar al-Awlaki

Feds target American-born Muslim cleric for kill or capture

Anwar al-Awlaki

The U.S. government has targeted American-born Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki to be killed or captured, a U.S. official told CNN Wednesday.

“We would be remiss if we didn’t find ways to pursue someone who is a serious threat to this country and has plotted against Americans,” the official said.

Al-Awlaki, who is believed to be hiding in Yemen, called last month for jihad against America. He said in an audio message that “America is evil.”

His sermons and recordings have been found on the computers of at least a dozen terror suspects in the United States and Britain. In addition, al-Awlaki admits to having communication with U.S. Army Maj. Nidal Hassan, who has been charged in the shooting deaths of 13 people at Ford Hood, Texas, in November.

Sounds like something out of an Old West movie, with the miscreant’s photo attached to a flier inviting any and all citizens to bring him (or her) to justice. This raises several legal issues, since Anwar al-Awlaki is an American Citizen, born in New Mexico. However, as Anwar al-Awlaki apparently moved from advocating attacks against the US to actually participating in the planning of attacks – the legal questions may be moot.
