Farrakhan Says “Don’t Be Pacified By Obama Election”

farrakhanMEMPHIS, Tenn. — Minister Louis Farrakhan on Sunday urged his followers not to become complacent by President Barack Obama’s election and to work to repair communities.

The 76-year-old Nation of Islam leader said in a speech commemorating the 14th anniversary of the Million Man March that people shouldn’t become pacified by the election of the first black president.

“This can pacify you and lull you to sleep in a dangerous time, making you think that we live in a post-racial America — when the opposite is true,” he said to loud applause.

The Chicago-based Nation of Islam has embraced black nationalism since its founding in the 1930s, and has used Obama’s election as a launching point for celebration, intellectual discussion and a call to action.

“You may not be pleased with everything he’s saying and doing, but you have to understand that he’s been voted in to take care of the affairs of a nation, and not yours and mine particularly,” Farrakhan said. “He’s the American president, not the black president.”

Given those broad responsibilities, African-Americans need to “accept responsibility to build our own communities,” Farrakhan said.

Farrakhan has recently had a strong presence at events addressing a rise in youth violence. He has said the death of Derrion Albert, a Chicago high school honor student fatally beaten by other teens in an attack captured on video, should be a call to action.

Sharpton threatens to sue Rush over op-ed remarks

alsharptonNEW YORK — The Rev. Al Sharpton is threatening to sue Rush Limbaugh for writing that the civil rights leader played a role in two New York race riots.

Limbaugh wrote that Sharpton played “a leading role in the 1991 Crown Heights riot” and the “1995 Freddie’s Fashion Mart riot” in a Wall Street Journal column published Saturday. Sharpton called both allegations false.

Sharpton was not present for or involved in the rioting in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights section in 1991. And he wasn’t present during the 1995 massacre at Freddie’s Fashion Mart, where there was no riot.

A Sharpton spokesman says that if Limbaugh doesn’t apologize or clarify his remarks, the reverend will sue.

Author, Terri Woods Sues Club For $1 Billion Over Racism

teriwoodsIt was supposed to be a big night for top urban fiction author Teri Woods, who had invited 175 people to party at a trendy SoHo nightclub to celebrate her new book.

But Woods ended up in tears when she found almost her entire guestlist being kept outside Greenhouse’s notorious velvet rope.

Now a $1 billion class-action suit says the partygoers were denied entry because they were black.

“They should have just put up a sign that said, ‘No Coloreds Allowed,’” fumed Kashan Robinson, 39, of the Bronx, one of the plaintiffs. “There was no reason for them to not allow us into that club, except for the color of our skin.”

Club owner Barry Mullineaux declined to discuss what had happened to Woods’ party beyond calling charges of racism “all pretty much bogus.”

Woods has text messages she says he sent that night showing he was barring people based on appearance. “Everybody looking at me like this ur people Barry???” read a text message. “I couldn’t let in 300lb girls.”

Forget it Terri. This one is a non-starter.
